    I worked at Cenovus

    Pros

Steady employment, fair compensation, most people are friendly and helpful.

    Cons

Managers and leads are very condescending and try to lead by intimidation, Not open to any input at all from outside of the “bubble”. Very unorganized and inefficient polices and procedures with no symmetry at all between and within departments. People just do whatever they want with no accountability.

    Advice to Management

Improve communication with all employees and outside contractors. Listen to your boots on the ground as they generally have a very good idea of what’s going on as they aren’t in a office and behind a computer screen and on the phone all day or in “meetings”.

I have been working at Cenovus full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Wages are still ok, benefits blow

    Cons

Alex came in and he had good ideas, but at the plant level everything is back to the way it was. Bare bones on the floor, and still talk of job cuts but now they’re in the control room- this is coming from senior Coordinators that were actually doubled in amount after all the last cuts were done. Advancement, forget about it, unless you are buddies with the boss, same goes for the bonus system. It should be scrapped... and come up with a fair system. This one benefits the butt kissers, not the actual good workers. As for their development plan, there is no development-they tell you what your doing , not asking where your future plan in the company would be. It’s a complete joke As for the company itself, it put the screws to the communities near the plants by moving workers away to Calgary, destroying the housing market (Cold Lake/Bonnyville). When hired before, you had to relocate to the area, which actually helped the communities, now they will pay you to travel. Benefits- they were decimated during the cuts, bring them back instead of hiring again. Look at the jobs they have listed now, after getting rid of hundreds of good people during downturn 4-5 years ago. So in closing, things were looking good in what Alex had in mind, but with the same people running the show the plan is a huge failure, look at getting rid of the people in charge, then company might change, might. Morale still sucks

    Pros

Competitive salary and benefits Good work facilities

    Cons

Arrogant , Unqualified leadership Toxic political work environment Poor business outlook

    Advice to Management

The “new” leadership at Cenovus has developed Stockholm syndrome and become the same as the old. If you really want to change culture you need to change your senior operational leaders. Their values and lack of integrity haven’t changed. The old boys club is still intact. Poor Morale is linked to the lack of meritocracy, not benefits or parties. Operationally, work is chaos. People routinely go around work flows to... look good and get rewarded on individual issues, at the expense of the rest of the organization . I have never worked for a company so arrogant. The business results we get are a result of great reservoir, not because of great team work.

I have been working at Cenovus full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The people at the working level are nice and want to do a good job. The new building and crammed cubicles aren’t all that bad, it’s better than being unemployed. Alex is trying to do the right thing but he’s hampered by others in mgmt levels up and down the ranks. Q

    Cons

No raises for years and years but I suppose that’s the time we are in. Mgmt still has that you should be happy you have a job so shut up attitude. People are leaving on their own now vs layoffs. Not giving any exit interviews to find out why. My biggest issue is with the mgmt and how they have always looked after themselves at every level and how to get ahead vs any actually caring about their employees. They all... have their eye on the next move up and their development vs any of the people that work for them. It’s also painful to see the HR dribble they put out about employee development when the leaders just go through the motions. People make their voices heard around here by leaving as no one internally wants to hear about issues, and those that can leave are doing so. Saying that it’s not as bad as it used to be with the non stop layoffs that we went through.

    Advice to Management

People leave because of their leaders so take a hard look at who is leaving and where. Some managers or group leads can’t be fixed so show some courage for once and address the poor leadership. But sadly you won’t.
