Utilization Review Specialist

I don’t know what to make of this. I’ve been out of work and interviewing for 3.5 weeks now. I feel like they go really well, then I get, we will call you and let you know we have a couple other candidates. Then poof nothing. SMH…I am very skilled and would be a great benefit for someone. Has anyone else run into this problem? Please any advice would help. Thanks so much.

    ABA Therapy isn’t for everyone

    Nov 28, 2022 - Behavioral Technician
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Decent Office culture, very affirming of diversity, in depth training and regular reviews with staff and leadership.

    Cons

Different methods for different supervisors means lack of continuous style of treatment for clients. ABA therapy, though recognized as the leading science based therapy for autism, runs the risk of turning clients from people into data points, basic ‘Negative’ behavior can be marked against a clients improvement even when that behavior is common in the general populous and can negatively impact the clients development due to a general need for consistent improvement that isn’t always capable of being had.

The ethics of ABA therapy aside, the corporate office "cuts costs to increase revenue" and it shows

    Oct 10, 2022 - Compliance Associate

    Pros

    - People in the corporate office also genuinely care about the kids/clients and there is a good feeling of togetherness in that sense. - The office was professionally cleaned/maintained. - Health and dental insurance (at least in California, RIP new Texas employees probably)

    Cons

    - I can't speak for other departments, but the compliance department was treated like the digital janitors of all the other departments. Compliance started doing the jobs of about 4 departments in the year I worked there. - When the p*ndemic first started, CARD's policy was to allow clients to no-show/cancel appointments if they suspected being sick, but therapists were reprimanded for cancelling services if they felt sick. Hm. - The yearly review/raise was pushed back in 2020 when the new CEOs took over, and then they laid off/furloughed a TON of people right before the time period for giving raises. - They refuse to give any raises even after almost 3 years. - Mandatory overtime because they're so understaffed & unorganized. - They're moving their corporate office from California to Texas, presumably so they can pay people less and have less regulations. - Don't work here if you live in LA county, they don't pay anything comparable to LA minimum wage.

    Review

Aug 18, 2022 - Behavior Technician in Fairfax, VA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Being able to build relationships with these kids and work on helping them better communicate their wants and needs with those around them, including their family. Fun co workers. They seem to really care about their employees mental health. Open door policy. Safe space. Fun social outings. Flexible scheduling. Supervisors really take the time to make sure you understand things, and help you problem solve if you’re having trouble. Supervisors also really care about their patients and show it. Making sure their needs are met. Center was always kept organized and clean, many options for the kids to play with.

    Cons

Leadership will present goals to staff in a way that makes them compete against each other. They think that this will motivate them to perform better, but it just creates animosity and tension. I believe this is not their intention, but it is the result. Families cancel often which results in no pay; considering that the company still charges the families and pockets the money for themselves is a huge con. This is extremely frustrating as we spend money on gas getting to and from the center and the patients homes. Many times leadership will forget to tell the therapists that the sessions were even canceled, showing their poor communication skills. Leadership does not provide assistance quick enough in situations that put the therapists and patients in danger.
