I have been working at Central Maine Medical Center full-time

    Pros

32 Hours a week with full time benefits.

    Cons

Lots of call once off orientation. Not a great orientation program for experienced nurses. Asked to leave once cases are done, sometimes not getting 32 hours pay.

    Advice to Management

Pay overtime when you ask people to stay late, even if they are not on call, because the on call people are being paid to stay.

    Pros

Most coworkers are great to be around. Teaching school is a plus. Did help pay for school until all spending was frozen.

    Cons

They treat students like employees, most employees don't want to do their jobs. Morale is quite low. Pay is low. They expect employees to do more with less when they already don't have much to work with.

    Advice to Management

Management is horrible. They don't care about employees and are more worried about numbers rather than how to keep their turnover rates down. Staff is overworked and very underpaid.

    Pros

job security, wellness program, parking garage, non-smoking environment,

    Cons

sick time only paid at 60% after using a percentage of choice (vacation) time. Below average pay for being on-call. No extra pay for per diem working without any benefits.

    Advice to Management

Would like to see policy for NO MANDATORY CALL for persons age 62 and older.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Central Maine Medical Center (Less than a year)

    Pros

Training available, many units, float pool, some staff friendly and helpful, full cafeteria during weekday daytime hours

    Cons

Some staff very unfriendly, reported to manager things didn't change. Staff are unwilling to help or train someone who is new to acute care. Cafeteria closes early and is expensive.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Value the input. Every person is there to do a job. Don't allow veteran employees to treat new ones so terribly. Take complaints seriously.

I have been working at Central Maine Medical Center full-time

    Pros

Feeling like you're valued, transparency between staff and executive level.

    Cons

Corporate environment, paid time off policy is not separate for non clinical employees and you have to use it for holidays even though you're not supposed to work holidays

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Central Maine Medical Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Staff are highly professional and collegial at Manager levels on down. Many are very long-tenured---20+ years. Most are passionate about their jobs and eagerly offer to assist others when needed.

    Cons

Never seems to be enough money for personnel, day to day tools and good salaries for skilled people. Workloads are heavy and increasing.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the professionals you have hired. Include them in strategic and annual planning. Pay more for the best staff and hire more staff to adequately and safely manage the increasing workloads.

    Pros

They offer reasonable health insurance plan. The starting wage is acceptable. There are some good employee discounts offered.

    Cons

Training is minimal. Policies as put forth by Human Resources are not consistently applied at satellite offices. There are office politics involved in most offices. If a person does not 'fit' the matrix it is a very uncomfortable environment to then work within. There is no room to improve the fit once it is decided by management. Rehiring is next to impossible if you did not 'fit' at one location.

    Advice to Management

Practice consistency throughout an office. Do not blame the office staff for an Office manager's negative job performance. Listen to the patient's regarding phone service. Listen to patients also that they want warm, personable staff not robots.
