    Great place to work

    Pros

It was rewarding working in higher education and helping people make a better life for themselves. The atmosphere allowed for hard work while balancing family life. People were nice and truly cared about the mission of the organization.

    Cons

Politics are pretty heavy and it is hard to get some things done with such a large organization.

    Not good.

    Pros

They hire people to work there.

    Cons

Only care about $$$ that comes from attendance policy. No student reviews or any kind of thought about helping people grow as employees in the system. It's all about $$$. President won't respond to your emails if you have a problem, at least he didn't to mine.

    Pros

Awesome people (below senior mgmt. level) doing the day-to-day work who genuinely care about students and the impact education has on lives and our society. Good benefits.

    Cons

Senior management that are not leaders and do not listen to employees. Little chance for advancement. Low pay. Strict and archaic rules and processes. No strategic thinking about what initiatives are being done - too many decisions made that are not based data or business reason for doing work and little measurement of success. Very ad hoc approach to running an organization. Used to be a good place to work but has gone downhill and morale is very low and many good employees are leaving.

Pay is bad but coworkers are great

    Mar 9, 2022 - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

People who work here really care about helping students and the community. They are also friendly. Work isn’t super stressful and work life balance looks pretty good if you’re not in IT. Events (speakers, forums, etc.) put on by the college are great! You’re vested at year 5 if you can stay that long , but then again salaries are depressingly low so what does vestment really add? State healthcare plan was good to me!

    Cons

Not a lot of opportunities to move up in the college because so many people stay (or at least they used to). Pay is also terrible and some fellow coworkers have to use food pantries to get by. Leadership likes to emphasize that we don’t work there for the money, but that’s a hard sell when you realize their salaries are 80k+ while yours is barely $17 an hour. As always, a lot of this is set by the state, so there’s not much that can be done. Also heard some really racist comments made by faculty and staff which is wild given the student body we serve. Lots of diversity within departments and middle management, but senior leadership may not always reflect the on the ground demographics. Professional development depends on your department—some managers try to hoard talent or stifle talent. Central campus is center of professional development which is annoying if you work on any other campus. Working remotely is a toss-up. Some departments are more political than others.

    Too big bad culture!

Mar 14, 2014 - Faculty in Charlotte, NC

    Pros

There are some very good people among the cut throats. Very few people are there for the student or for their interests. Most just want to do the minimum amount of work to get by and send students to the next person so they do not have to do the work. But again, there are a

    Cons

Most people are just at the college for the pay check. The state could be bankrupt over and over again because of the expenditure of this place.

    Great place to work!

    Jun 25, 2014 - Program Assistant

    Business Outlook

    Pros

flexible work schedules and work locations depending on your department. Very relaxed atmosphere at satellite campuses. Good benefits, little to no cost for benefit premiums. Good culture and down to earth people to work with. Fun environment. Vacation and sick accrued separately with option to roll over certain amount of hours. Holiday schedule followed public school system, even on snow days.

    Cons

Odds of getting promoted or moving to higher position was very slim. Hard to get out of the department you're in. Budget issues caused little to no pay raises for a number of years as well as furloughs. Some areas have micromanagers. Some positions are budget based and could be eliminated at any time. Constant departmental changes within management.
