-stress from living where you work

    Advice to Management

Good management with slight issues with communication (either WAY too much or WAY too little)

I worked at Central Washington University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are lots of great people who work at CWU. My favorite part of my job there was the close-knit community.

    Cons

The pay is abysmal unless you're the president, a VP or a provost--and I was in a fairly prestigious position with over a decade of experience. It's one of the only decent places to work in Ellensburg, where the cost of living is too high. So they take advantage of employees, knowing full well there aren't any other options in town. I addition, for about 3 of the 4 years I worked there, I and the rest of my team had to endure daily abuse by a totally unstable, dishonest boss. Our complaints went ignored for years. It was a truly toxic environment until she left. After she was gone it improved, but not much.

    Advice to Management

Where do I start? Pay your people what they're worth, listen when employees tell you about problems.

I worked at Central Washington University full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was hired by Central Washington University as a graphic design intern through their publicity center. The staff is unbelievable and eased me into the process with confidence. The staff is friendly, and laid back enough to make everyone feel comfortable. Central is a warm environment, and welcomes everyone. The hours were great, 9-5 with a :30 minute lunch, and two 15 minute breaks.

    Cons

The only downside would be the pay, and thats primarily because I was hired as an intern.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. My experience with the publicity center was nothing short of wonderful. I gained a handful of new knowledge, and wouldn't change a thing.

I have been working at Central Washington University (More than a year)

    Pros

Colleagues in the math department are a great group of people to work with. They are dedicated and work hard to train students. They are open minded to adapt new methods to reach students. They try to make use of new technology in their teaching methods.

    Cons

    1) The university rate a professor success solely on student evaluations and not even consider the success a professors has on training students (i.e. number of students that receive A or B in the course).

    2) The university is also slow to adopt/approve of new teaching methods that accelerate student learning.

    3) Racial tensions exist on the campus. Racial discrimination is evident in hiring and promotions and the problem exist throughout upper management.

    4) Hiring is based on the old boy system and the universities fails to do a national search on many of their hiring decisions.

    Advice to Management

Management need to recruit and retain faculty of color. The student population is 20% brown and growing. Teaching only in English can present a challenge to student learning. The university has an adversarial position to teaching in multiple languages at the same time to reach all students.

I have been working at Central Washington University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Starting work at CWU is pretty painless, and work hours are very flexible and student-centered.

    Cons

At least in my department, supervisors can be a bit condescending, leaving a slightly off-putting flavor on the work environment.

    Advice to Management

Treat student employees like employees with hectic lives, not grade-schoolers.

    Pros

Warm and welcoming work environment. Good atmosphere. Great mission (helping students to be prepared and competitive for internships and jobs.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Keep an open dialogue and noticeable transparency with employees.
