I have been working at Centrica as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Treat contractors just like perm staff. Great location and near to town centre, so plenty of things to do at lunch time

    Cons

Cannot think of anything as a con. As mentioned, they treat contractors just like perm members of staff.

I worked at Centrica as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    Pay Rate was reasonable.
    Work was easy.
    Very possible to co-locate teams.

    Cons

The management are not truly embracing Agile
There are multiple blockers obstructing progress with Agile
Outsourced supplier is really running the entire show - they are not interested in Agile.
Extremely fragile environments - not fit for purpose.
    No real Product Ownership.
Half of the team speak in Tamil and will not include the rest oft he team by speaking English.

There are all these problems and many more but the killer is that there is NO desire to change any of this.

    Advice to Management

Management need to take their roles seriously and truly seek to improve the modus operandi at British Gas. Once they've identified some specific areas where they would like to see improvement, they should go out and procure the appropriate advisory service - whether it's an Agile coach or Lean consultant etc. Just get some help because they cannot fix the issue, they are very much a part of it.

I worked at Centrica full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy place to work, generally nice people to work and get on with, knowledgeable people in the field of energy

    Cons

The usual thing of middle managers on power trips, lots of managers pretending they know what they are doing but rarely do, blaggers, poor pay unless you are a contractor (although it is changing)

    Advice to Management

Don't get the wool pulled over your eyes. Not everyone that you think is best for the the company are what they seem.

    Pros

Big company, pay is ok, lots of benefits, home working flexibility, lunch canteen , nice offices and meeting rooms . Events out side of work also

    Cons

Way way too much favouritism with upper management and no direct answer to concerns.currently going through transformation change across business and job losses uncertainty . Back chatting and gossip frequent! Centrica "values@ don't really mean anything

    Advice to Management

    Too much favouriteism

I worked at Centrica (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed working with a great team and got experience working with very large IT systems solutions. The company enjoyed being one of the top 50 large company employers a couple of years running.

    Cons

Centrica being a large company meant that sometimes office politics takes over leading to the work and customers slipping to the bottom of the list of priorities.

    Advice to Management

Keep focussing on keeping the best talent, drive great IT solutions, and minimise office politics within the senior management teams.

I have been working at Centrica (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very good name to have on a cv. Historically one of the best and most profitable utilities to work for. Salary and bonus good if you suck up to your manager. If you have BP on your cv you will get hired.

In British Gas I've been able to work with a great set of people in a fun finance organisation with lots of other Big 4 alumni.

    Cons

Since the new ceo came in there has been nothing but job cuts and cost reduction announced with a long wait (over a year) for people to find out if they are in scope for redundancy. The new strategy is just undoing the previous CEOs work. Seems like more of an ego contest than what's right for the business. This has created a lot of stress across the company. It is now a horrible culture and share price at the lowest in years.

Some pension and share scheme benefits are getting taken away.

No development or investment in lower grade staff, they have to leave instead if they want to progress their careers

    Little standardisation of finance systems

    Advice to Management

Stop creating roles for the CEO's mates at the top. Just because someone worked at BP doesn't mean they superior to everyone else. There is a lot of new senior roles being created when thousands of job cuts are announced.

Hire from within. The company without career progression does not give a reason to stay.

Respect and value your employees as these company values are important amongst the lower levels not just something for the annual report.

    Pros

Centrica have a wide range of company benefits via Smartpay which is really good. Also lots of discounts for almost everything you can think of via Perkz scheme.

    Cons

Current work force reduction programme is a bit worrying and is something to bear in mind if you are applying for a position within the company.

    I worked at Centrica full-time

    Pros

Great people, flexible working in most teams, good personal development courses

    Cons

Lots of clique's - you have to be in an inner circle to get any form of career here, office politics is dreadful and managers are out to save their own backsides, too many micromanagers, managers let people who do nothing get away with it

    Advice to Management

Kick out micromanagers and promote others outside of inner circles
