I worked at Century 21 Department Stores full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A pretty lax and laid-back environment. Monthly breakfasts and recognition meetings. Consistent day to day schedule with no overnights. Owning your own projects. Competitive pay for Visual Specialists starting at 18 usd ph.

    Cons

Highly disorganized and dysfunctional environment. "Managers" are never present on floor and highly favor certain employees based on personal factors rather than ones experience in said field or hard working ethic.

    Advice to Management

Encouraging and supporting your team members may sound irrelevant but understand that you get more bees with honey. Start hiring qualified expert individuals that specialize in a certain sector rather than promoting based on years worked or favoritism.

I worked at Century 21 Department Stores part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good part time job for school students, Over time, you can swap schedules with Co-workers, User Friendly Register/Computer, Employee Discount 15%, 30% off uniforms (once a year), Incentives, Paid time off after a year, Benefits for recommended a friend, 30 minute Lunch + 15 minute break. Closed on Christmas Day. Bonuses for Signing up loyalty members.

    Cons

All black everything (Dress Code). SUNDAY is the worst day to work! Its hard to get the weekends off. A lot of Incentives (ways to make extra money) were taken away, Starts off at minimum wage, $0.10 raise annually, Clocking out for breaks takes up too much time, L.P. (Loss Prevention) Pat downs are ridiculously annoying, and time consuming especially when taking breaks. Can't leave or enter through the main entrance only the employee entrance. Employees are under constant surveillance with cameras over the registers, store requirements to staple shopping bags + receipts. Strict demands for signing up Guests/Customers for Loyalty Rewards Cards is (at least) 10 guests per day. Having to work/learn departments other than the one you are hired for.

I worked at Century 21 Department Stores part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working at Century 21 store as a Sales Associate is like being a slave in the BC era building the pyramids under the lash of the master whip except the “whip” in this modern age is minimum wage.
The rules are designed for them to make money off you even when it is unethical and certainly unlawful to do so. For example, the time clock system, depending on your department you can only punch in on a certain level. With that in mind, on your way to punch in you will be stopped by at least five customers asking you for assistance. You have not punched in yet, however, you are advised to assist them. This will occur on multiple levels before you arrive at your designated time clock to punch it. If you’re not late by then, you’ve won. Congratulations, Century 21 just got 10 free minutes out of you.

    Cons

Nevertheless, it doesn’t end there. When you go on break, you punch out. On your way to the break room, at least five people asking for assistance again stop you. Again, Century 21 just got 10 free minutes out of you. This is your prize, after working an eight+ hour shift and only having a half hour break. Roughly, you have 20 minutes to eat and rest your feet. No matter your age, you will have full body pains working here and will feel like you are a hundred after working their outrageous schedules: seven days shifts with no day off. Why should you? You are not important! There is no work life balance with this employer.
If Century 21went on Undercover Boss, they would be shamed out of business.

    Pros

Weekly pay, you meet awesome and hardworking people, free food on holidays, energetic environment. You also get to meet amazing guests. You get recognized for your hard work.

    Cons

Minimum wage, some managers overwork you and take advantage of you, no work-life balance. Can be a toxic environment if you allow stress to take over. Always understaffed. Expect maximum work for minimum pay.

    Advice to Management

Stop overworking and taking advantage of your employees and lead by example. Your employees are not your puppets and they work as best as they can. Also if employeee complain about a manager, do something to immediately fix the situation and watch them closely, don't ignore it.

I worked at Century 21 Department Stores (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are no advantages for working for this employer.

    Cons

The disadvantages working for this particular employer is that the management is very unorganized and incoherent. The employees are not sync in following proper chain of commands that apply. They seem to create their own set of rules in not following proper leadership. There is lack of assistance on the store floor which creates an issue for customers, where they become unhappy shopping and decide to leave. Price check requests becomes a hassle for the supervisors overseeing the registered complexes, because the customers evidently become aggravated and decide to take manners in their hands in going to retrieve another merchandise themselves that they are purchasing with the actual price ticket. It becomes time consuming for the sales associate to respond for the request. Therefore there is a high volume of inconsistency on the store floors.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that all employees that work for this company are trained very effectively and adhere to the policies that apply.

    Cons

Management. Very disrespectful to staff. Very little positive reinforcement. I would not recommend this company. Salary under industry average.

I have been working at Century 21 Department Stores part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Summer sales are very good.
    Fall sales are pretty good.
    Winter sales are very good.
On major holidays we get free food.

    Cons

    Pay is crap.
    Management is the worst.
    Holiday discounts are nothing.
Lack of respect within the company.
We always need help at the registers because people are always quiting and/or fired.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees better. Not as in throw a party and tell us that we're special, then the next day go back to treating us like tools. Treat us the way you want to be treated. When it comes to meeting daily goals with credit card sign ups, you have to realize that sometimes we have our high and low days. It is one thing to pressure us but another to tear down our confidence and belittle us.

    Pros

I've meet some really cool people working here.

    Cons

Standing up on your feet so such long hours, the supervisors were rude. Discount sucked (15%). The security felt like they were real cops lol.

    Advice to Management

Fix your act! You guys don't know how to talk to people!

I worked at Century 21 Department Stores part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked as a cashier and it was okay because most of the time the stores were busy so you stayed busy as well and that made time fly . Flexible with schedule, Management was nice & overall I met some pretty cool people working there. Decent first job.

    Cons

Pay was extremely low, Cashiers are extremely over worked and under paid. They are asked to do EVERYTHING. Another con are The rules that apply for cashiers regarding the ASM to check $50 bills and above, them ONLY being able to do things such like returns and exchanges: it really aggravates customers & really becomes tedious and annoying for cashiers because it makes the line wait longer and theres only 1 ASM for 8 cashiers who all might need authorization for a return or exchange at the same time. Imagine how that is during holiday times. Always seems like its under staffed. Hires anybody. Ridiculous with their desperate over selling of their rewards card that no one wants.

    Advice to Management

Pay your workers more. This is retail not slavery.

    Pros

They are growing and the company is getting organized properly.

    Cons

There are many parts of the company that don't operate to industry standards. They also have limited budgets.

    Advice to Management

Utilized the talent you have better. Learn what skills your people have then find out where best to apply them.
