I worked at Cepheid full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

High material handler pay, Family conscious company, decent benefits and a growing company equals room for advancement.

    Cons

Cepheid has been around since 1996, but in some ways is behind the times and is still catching up to current manufacturing, training and safety practices. Just bought out by Danaher Corp.(2016). Minor layoffs with new company take over. If you have ever worked for a company that was bought out by another company, you have experienced the big "changes". The CEO John Bishop is gone already.

    Advice to Management

    Communicate.

I have been working at Cepheid full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I am a Field Service Engineer currently. I love my boss and the work as well. Being part of a company that improves patient care by providing faster diagnostics is also cool. In my department of Service, everything isn't perfect, but we get the job done and work well as a team.

    Cons

The challenge with field service is some days you work 14 hour days and some weeks you work 60/70 hour weeks. However, that comes with the industry. The company also just got acquired by danaher and there is a cloud of mystery right now as to any changes that might be on the horizon.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work, listening to your employees and trying hard to keep them. Keep recruiting good talent that bring good attitudes and work ethic to the team.

I worked at Cepheid full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Not many. I would say some of my coworkers were good people and nice to work with

    Cons

Worst upper management ever. I had 4 Managers in 4 years. Culture always changing, no sure footing. Some week, had to work up where close to 80 hours just to make things go, it was overkill.

    Advice to Management

    Quit

I worked at Cepheid (More than 3 years)

    Pros

great coworkers for the most part. was fortunate to work with many talented individuals with no egos. great technology, great projects in pipeline... good work-life balance. flexible times, free food 2 times a week at least..

    Cons

changes slowly being made ever since Danaher take-over. former CEO is in NO way a friend of mine. Decided to sell company to Danaher and retire... probably knew the company was losing $$. HR was always a weak point even before the take-over. Bad communication on HR end with other departments... Recent budget cuts... company cares more about making an extra dollar than keeping employees... very difficult to get promoted unless you have a popular manager. i was never promoted during the 4 years employed here.. possible inside back-stabbing... just because you complete all your work and go beyond your job, it does not mean you will get promoted.. only 3% max annual increases and no bonuses unless you are top level.... maybe things will be better with Danaher? highly doubt it...

    Advice to Management

start promoting people! and best of luck with Danaher.

    Pros

The people - Many of the entry level/worker bees were some of the best friends I ever met. If you were under the right manager, they were very keen on training you for new skills. Not much else, though.

    Cons

Management. The executive staff created a culture where people were too afraid to say anything other than "yes." This just set up people to fail, and often heads would roll for the smallest mistake. But as long as you were not in the immediate path of the exec team, you might be okay. Unfortunately, it just wasn't a healthy environment to be in at all.

    Advice to Management

This is mainly for the exec staff - Allow your staff to give their honest opinions without fear of retribution. Give staff support to do what you expect them to do.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

I could probably do nothing for at least 6 months without anyone noticing.

    Cons

No communication. No transparency, Silo'ing of information. No training. 100% of the time is spent putting out fires and 0% of time on strategic planning. Upper management doesn't listen. Future plans are all smoke and mirrors. Poor evaluation of talent. Lack of turnover leads to complacency and laziness. "Fibbing" is encouraged and acknowledged by VP level individuals... ie lie to employees and set false expectations to boost work output in the short term.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the yes-men. See Volkswagen emission scandal... The directors and "managers" at this company spend nearly 100% of their time communicating upward and have absolutely no idea what is going on below them. They make as many promises as possible to keep people above them happy, and then just sit back and hope everything gets done. If nothing gets done, no worries, because god forbid any of them are actually held accountable!
