Great place to start, don't get stuck forever

May 26, 2015 - Senior Solution Consultant in Kansas City, MO
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

-Great way to introduce yourself into an amazing and high paying field -There are a TON of extremely intelligent people working for Cerner. Find a mentor, start leeching and then get out after 3 years. -Network, network, network -Great, young working environment. We have joked that the company is actually a modeling agency in disguise (Miss Kansas USA 2013 works at Cerner!) -"independent" and self directing folks will love it here. Little direction, tons to learn.

    Cons

-little direction: like another reviewer posted, Cerner is an IT company so EVERYTHING is online. It is almost impossible to find anything. You literally have a learning curve to their 'uCern' and wiki pages. Their search algorithm seems like it was written 100 BC. Sharepoint is terrible. There really isn't a structure to any type of training (there is a very basic outline, but absolutely nothing in depth). - your knowledge base is determined by the number of clients/type of clients you have -promotions are based on how long you have been there and have almost nothing to do with your ability. They also have to do with what team you are on....so someone who started at the same time as you who knows absolutely nothing could get a 20k pay raise while your still making nothing -pay is awful compared to the industry standard. They just lowered the standard pay as of this year as well because it was 'above the industry standard' which is bogus -The work life balance is completely determined by the team your on and the position you are in. In terms of consulting, there is currently (as of may 2015) an entire corporate restructuring in the consulting field...no one in consulting agree's with this and it's going to be an epic fail. I'm not entirely positive on all of the details, but basically you are going to have build monkeys (delivery consultants) and then the 'architects' that travel to the client sites. This is also going to be determinant based on how much an associate wants to travel. -You aren't fully vested until 5 years -You get so sick and tired of meeting other Cerner employees at the bars

    Less Than Ideal Experience

Jan 6, 2023 - Technical Solutions Analyst in Kansas City, MO
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Good opportunity for recent grads to get some in-field experience - Skills learned can transfer over no matter the department you're placed in - Good health benefits - Relocation package offered - Fair amount of chances to connect with fellow & likeminded TSAs during training, who will likely be put on teams different than yours - There are goodhearted clients who you genuinely want to help

    Cons

    - Aside from learning the Cerner ticketing system and Cerner in-company resources, 2 week TSA training felt useless as we hardly learned how to prioritize the types of issues and manner of software we will use once we're put on a team - Work culture you experience will highly depend on the department you're chosen for, so you will never know what your day-to-day will be like until it is too late - Some teams are severely understaffed compared to others, putting advanced workload on your table with no one able to make time to assist/guide you - Corporate hierarchy is extremely apparent; work/life balance for technical solutions employees is unpredictable and only gets worse the higher up you go - You will encounter some clients with grudges and gripes held from the previous employee who they worked with - The opposite applies as well; some clients will hold you to a standard regardless of the length of time you've worked with them or Cerner, expecting you to have an answer for anything and everything as an associate employee

    Flexible

Mar 22, 2018 - Anonymous Employee in Kansas City, MO

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Its easy to stay busy and there is not always consistancy. However this provides for a bit of flexibility which can be hard to find. You have to be proactive in your career and managing your work life balance or you will fail. Also, be comfortable with not knowing things. You will learn as you go. I have had a great experience working here and overall love it. Flexibility, Benefits, hard to get bored.

    Cons

Pay is low, inconsistent amount of travel, no personal desk, you don't know what life holds in three months.

Good place to start your career, but horrible place to end it

Jan 23, 2012 - Software Engineer in Kansas City, MO
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

They hire people straight out of college, so you don't need a lot of experience. If you manage to get on a good team, work can be a fun, enjoyable place. There are a lot of internal opportunities to move around if you're wanting to try something new.

    Cons

Horrible work/life balance and your satisfaction lies purely in the hands of the team you're placed on. If you get a good manager things aren't so bad, but there are teams that work 60-80 hours a week once or twice a month.

Don't do it, there are better jobs

Jan 28, 2022 - Anonymous in Kansas City, MO

    Pros

    - You can work from home - They can be flexible and will allow a good work life balance (I think it also may depend on the department you are in) - I think the only other thing is that, since Oracle will probably buy them, it might get better. At least you can put Oracle on your resume

    Cons

    - The pay and benefits are not even close to other companies in the Kansas City area. If you are in a starting or mid-level role, don't expect to get paid very much. I am in a senior position and found out companies are paying more for entry level positions than what I make. There raises are a joke as well. Also, the vacation isn't great and the insurance you would think would be better. - Everything is broken all the time. I worked in two different departments and pretty much every week something was down. There are definitely too many cooks in the kitchen when working on the programs. One department will change something without letting any other department know. There is a lot of wasted time waiting for things to get fixed or run properly. - To go along with that, nobody knows what is going on and there is very little communication amongst the other departments

Your experience depends on your role, your manager, and the culture of the organization you land in.

Mar 10, 2014 - Consultant in Kansas City, MO
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

If you land in the right role and management buys in to the culture HR tries to push, you will enjoy flexibility and a slew of onsite benefits (gym, classes, cafeteria, clinic, and pharmacy.) There are some really good people here and they make the job.

    Cons

Most struggle to find the work/life balance and have issues with excessive stress pushed by management. Additionally, Cerner hires the majority of it's employees right out of college, allowing them to pay minimally compared to other employers in the market (recruits don't know better). While compensation targets are competitive to the market - they never pay you at your target. Unless you go in to sales, traveling delivery consultant, or a senior management you won't be seeing the $$. Cerner undervalues tenure, and you get no pay increase for getting your masters degree and minimal for promotions. However, they do hire in people into an 'executive training' program and put them in high impact positions with high compensation despite a lack of training (over more deserving tenured employees.)

Cerner took my career to a level I was not even able to imagine a year prior.

Apr 1, 2014 - Solution Delivery Consultant in Kansas City, MO

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Cerner takes a genuine interest in their employees and their families (work/life balance is important). The extensive training Cerner invests in their employees in top notch and really prepares the employees to give the best service to their Clients. Cerner participates and gives back to the community and encourages employees and their families to do so as well. Cerner has a Health Clinic right on campus to minimize the time employees need to be out of work; encourages preventive care and a healthy lifestyle. The on campus cafeteria is like going to a 5 star restaurant with McDonald prices; foods from vegan, seafood, homestyle, etc and fresh made to order everyday. There is an on campus gym, fitness center, pool, raquetball courts etc. since they encourage their employees to reduce stress with physical fitness; a healthy body is a healthy mind and ultimately benefits the Clients.

    Cons

The area I was in was consulting and the weeks on the road tend to take a toll after a while; often expected to teach classes, hold knowledge transfers etc on Fridays after being on the road catering to the Client for 50-60 hours Monday through Thursday. I expected pay increases more often or at least when they came around to be a larger percentage. The pay increases where based on the Corporation as a whole and not necessarily the venue in which the employee worked and their participation in the profits.

    Cons

Not ideal if you are seeking work/life balance and especially if you have children and any with additional needs.

Working for Cerner is good and pay is not that great.

Nov 5, 2018 - Associate Senior Software Engineer in Kansas City, MO
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

There's not a single day I have worked on the same thing here at Cerner. Cerner is very good for graduates out of college. They can get to know about the software culture quickly by working for Cerner.

    Cons

Pay is less and your work life balance depends on the team you end up on.
