I have been working at Certified Laboratories full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Monthly parties, free water bottle at 6 months, free t-shirt at 1 year lol

    Cons

Supervisors will push their work on you and expect you to drop everything you are in the middle of to complete tasks that they are responsible for. The supervisors will belittle you and threaten to call upper management on you. You would think upper management is unaware of these issues, but they are not. Instead, they will appease supervisors. Training is inadequate, poor and nonexistent. In certain departments, you are expected to learn on your own. They will fire and move individuals based on fabricated criticisms of supervisors. When those individuals that are fired and moved are great additions to the team. No internal investigations are launched to confirm the validity of claims. If you complain to HR they will turn their heads. We are short staffed, overworked...and cannot keep up with samples that come in. Raises are nonexistent. The 1:1 meetings are a joke along with the career ladders. The PTO accumulation is also ridiculous, you are given a limited amount of days off...and if you do take a vacation expect to come back to a ton of work. I'm not sure why upper management is playing a blind eye to what is happening in this company.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to listen to the employees that do the bulk of the mechanical work and get rid of supervisors that cannot complete simple tasks on their own.

    Pros

Job security , good work hours

    Cons

Low pay for office staff, only 10 days off a year, poorly managed

    Advice to Management

Hire someone experienced in management that can handle complex office issues that can make the necessary changes to increase workflow in a fair manner. This would increase morale and keep the remaining staff.

    Pros

Steady starting pay, good entry point for lab experience, flexible PTO, good team members (depending on what department you’re in), good HR department, flexible work attire (if you work in the laboratory), front offices are nice and presentable.

    Cons

Revolving door in terms of employment, (applies to all departments) many people have left in waves either by their own will or against their will. Not many opportunities to advance within your department. Overworking the technicians to the point of burnout. Unrealistic expectations from management (especially in times of bad weather). Might wear multiple hats without additional compensation or recognition. Extremely LONG hours if you are a lab technician in the Microbiology (2:00 AM-4:00 AM). No work/life balance whatsoever, might not see family and love ones often due to the amount of work and work hours (especially if you work in the Microbiology department). Upper management spends additional time being inventive in paying the employees, who do not have supervisory roles, as little as legally possible. Some departments are seemingly gender-based (Imports department). Upper management refuses to give employees bonuses despite protests to receive holiday bonuses instead of the yearly, waste of money, holiday party that only upper management desires. Not all supervisors are created equal, some are good and treat their employees with respect (Chemistry, Instrumentation, and IT departments) and others can be demeaning and undermining efforts. Laboratory equipment are old and seemingly purchased from a garage/storage sale. If you work in maintenance, anticipate that custodial and shipping and receiving duties might apply. The upper management letgo the previous night custodian, had no desire in seeking replacement, and rather post signs in bathrooms when bathrooms are not clean. Couriers are treated as expendable, they are expected to complete improbable pickups due to incompetence and last minute decisions, drive two states (LITERALLY) and back during rush hour, carry large quantities of samples that the laboratory cannot completely attend to. Large amount of samples received are not compatible for the individuals involved in receiving samples, which causes late hours for two departments (Microbiology and Sample Entry). The IT department consists of 1 or 2 qualified persons for the ENTIRE building, a building that is run by computer systems and databases that are integral to the company’s operations.
