I worked at Charity Dynamics as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    + Paid
+ Useful internship to learn marketing strategies / day-to-day life, and how to form a campaign for a nonprofit organization.
+ Worked with intelligent, powerful women including the Marketing Director and the CEO. Means a lot as a woman entering the workforce.
+ Contributed meaningful work to the company
+ As a student, they were very flexible with my schedule and allowed me to work from home once or twice
+ Provided snacks and a stocked kitchen; provided breakfast on several occassions

    Cons

    - Quiet office; did not interact much with employees outside of my department
    - Everyone is divided into cubicles, which is good for quiet workspace but makes it difficult to interact easily with others in the office

    Advice to Management

This marketing internship was a great introduction to the office work life. As an intern, networking is a major part of the experience. Having a few more opportunities to join in out-of-office events (like happy hour...though intern might not be 21) would be nice. And a more open floor plan might work well.

Keeping learning along the way and making adjustments to continue to make it a great place to work.

    "Great People...Awful Management."

Former Employee - Project Manager in Austin, TX
Former Employee - Project Manager in Austin, TX

    Pros

The employees, worker-bees, the people who make a difference every day are the best reason to work at Charity Dynamics.

Charity Dynamics started as a consulting company for non-profits. The President recruited a great team of people who contributed to the strategy and growth of the company. People were treated with respect, the team was cohesive, and professional development and growth were encouraged as well as within reach. As with any growing company, change can be hard but offers lots of opportunities.

    Cons

Outside of the employees, the best reasons to work at Charity Dynamics are long gone. Mis-management and lack of vision define the "new" Charity Dynamics. What started as a consulting company has turned into software deployment, professional design and web development services, product development, and third-party project management. Chasing every opportunity has splintered the ability of Charity Dynamics to maintain the same level of expertise and accuracy that they were once known for. It has also contributed to unreasonable project loads, unrealistic expectations for productivity, and a drastic decline in morale.

    Advice to Management

When a company the size of Charity Dynamics loses one-third of it's services team within six weeks it should be considered the writing on the wall and reflective of the short-comings in management. The good news is that it's not too late to turn things around but only if you're willing to make some hard decisions in regards to cronyism, upper-management, and vision.

    Pros

Charity Dynamics provides a lot of growth potential because they are constantly changing and because they haven't quite figured out what it is they do. I was able to move through several different positions within an extremely short period of time, which allowed me to get my hands on just about everything the business offers and learn a variety of skills. The company provides a bevy of challenges, which is great if you are one to embrace challenges.

    Cons

The management is extremely poor. The President has very little say in the operation of the company. The atmosphere is very much one of a dictatorship, where you constantly fear for your job. It is not a place for individualism or to be outspoken. Management loves to take full control of everything, with very little belief in employees, and is known to ridicule and call employees names to their faces and lie about what other employees say in order to make that employee feel like a lesser individual.

The atmosphere is that of show up, sit down, put your head down, and work through lunch so you can leave as soon as possible. Communication among employees, unless it is related to work and can be billed, is not encouraged. Projects are constantly underscoped, and employees are given very, very little time for non-billable work, even though meetings alone take up most, if not all, of that allotted time.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and pay more attention to their happiness. Figure out your niche and stick with it. Don't bite the hand that feeds you, whether it's your employees or your corporate partners.

    Pros

They support a lot of great nonprofits with their marketing know-how. As an employee at CD, you also support a bunch of great nonprofits.

    Cons

Best if you live in Northwest Austin, as that is the location of the office.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work, it's great to support so many wonderful nonprofits at one place of business!

    Pros

    - Awesome co-workers, and great flexibility with your schedule.
    - They allow you to work from home for 20% of your weekly hours, which is amazing.
    - Team has a lot of talent and they really care about the services provided to non- profit clients.
    - Pay is competitive, if not better than average.

    Cons

    - Management does not really listen to employees. They will give you time to vent, and let you voice your opinions and ideas. However, it seemed to be a waste of time as it was always their way or the highway.
    - Upper management has their hands in every little project.
    - Departments are so separated that their is little to no interaction with employees from other teams.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees and let them grow. Maybe plan more team building exercises that allow employees to interact with people from other departments.

    Pros

Coworkers are amazing! Also, it is very rewarding to help non-profits reach their goals and initiatives.

    Cons

Leadership/Management does not value the amazing talent they have. The lack of planning and fly by the seat of your pants mentality created high turnover and an unstable environment.

    Advice to Management

Listen to and trust your employees - you have hired awesome talent, let them flourish instead of stunting their growth (and your company's growth).

I have been working at Charity Dynamics full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Charity Dynamics is a great Austin company. I've been there for two years, have referred and had friends recruited and continually feel like I am challenged with opportunities to grow professionally. Specifically I feel like I'm given the opportunity to explore and develop technology and marketing solutions for really cool nonprofit organizations where none of the expertise might exist in the company. This process and knowledge is then used to innovate and expand.

While the pace of work is harried it's rarely boring. Management is flexible with staff time, allowing for Austin awful traffic, taking care of business at home, and managing a work life balance.

    Cons

In seeking to meet client needs the company rarely says no to clients often at the expense of growing in a strategic, focused direction. Not sure who they want to be against peers, competitors in the nonprofit or digital agency space.

    Pros

They offered a fair market salary

    Cons

CEO was a horrible communicator. Didn't know how to manage. Brought in a tough as nails right hand person who was worse. Absolutely horrible management.

Would take on projects regardless of skills or resource just to get money in the door. Looks like they are trying to inflate the value in order to sell the company later.
