Pros
  • Work/life balance is as good as it can be for consulting (in 13 reviews)

  • steep learning curve, plenty of opportunities for client interactions (even as a junior associate), working with very smart people (in 14 reviews)

Cons
  • Compensation is fine at first, but there's very little room for growth at the junior staff level, which is why most people leave after 2 years or so (in 17 reviews)

  • Long hours sometimes, but that's the nature of consulting (in 13 reviews)

I have been working at Charles River Associates full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

This is the best place for economic consulting (a.k.a. litigation consulting) with depth and breadth of industries and projects. Compensation is great and the company places a great deal of importance on quality training and professional growth. I feel taken care of at CRA. And this is not even getting at the fact that there are many really nice and professional people working here.

    Cons

I would appreciate more opportunities to present be it in front of internal or external clients.

I have been working at Charles River Associates full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

reasonable diversity of work. Limited use of "canned" approaches meaning the team must develop specific approaches to projects. Most projects do not involve heavy travel.

    Cons

Some VP / PM are too involved (micromanage), some too hands off until the end (fire drill), some get it right. Need to figure out which type you are working with. Has become somewhat bureaucratic over time.

    Advice to Management

Stop falling back on "public company" excuse for excessive bureascracy

    Pros

    Very bright and talented people
Great culture - easy to approach partners and senior management
    interesting projects
Great mix of industry and consulting hires
    Strong in Chemicals and Petroleum

    Cons

High staff turnover since winding down of ME office, and acquisition of Marakon
Formal training doesn't really match that of its peers

    Pros

Benefits were good and 401K match vested immediately, Salaries were OK, Very Smart Coworkers, Limited Administrative Burdens and or challenges

    Cons

Work was very spotty, sometime we were extremely busy (multiple all nighters) other times we went dry for two weeks at a time.

    Advice to Management

Need more extensive client base, Sr. mgmt needs to allow business consultants to manage products more independently. Also need more formal training initiatives.

    Pros

The litigation part of the firm is extremely successful. For younger people, it's easy to use as a stepping stone to business school. For middle management, it seems it's a pass through place. Not a lot of lifers here - as there were in previous times.

    Cons

There is a glass ceiling on the litigation side without advanced degree. The rainmakers on the BC side are not well positioned. Seems to be a lot of sitting around and waiting for the phone to ring. There is no a lot of concern about quality of life for junior staff. A true triangle management structure never really developed.

    Advice to Management

Sell the part of the firm focused on business consulting. It is a non core function, and not a growth area that has succeeded.
