Good company to start your career

      Pros

      1) CRA has a very open and friendly environment for the staff. You will work with bright individuals who are often widely respected in their industry while having the relaxed environment. From the analyst rank all the way through VP, all work as a team and you feel your opinions are valued during projects. 2) If employees are interested, it is possible to work across practices and even platforms. Employees must seek out this type of work though because it will not land in their lap. Seeking out work from other practices and platforms can create a great opportunity for personal development and create a broad skill base.

      Cons

      1) Long hours and time crunch projects are common. Time and project management are not key attributes of senior leaders in the firm. 2) Most staff are in a silo in their practice. At the junior level, it is very common to work on the same project or type of project over and over again. It takes work to reach out to other practices to get on projects so personal development has to be a desire of the employee. 3) Outside activities are not rewarded within CRA. Non-billable work must be done but you are not rewarded for creating marketing presentations or writing articles.

Review of one of the smaller offices in competition practice

      Pros

Get to develop good skills (SAS, Stata, analytic thinking, attention to detail, etc). Great co-workers. Good work-life balance. Get to work on high profile projects (though not all projects are high profile). Good launchpad for next steps. Very good healthcare benefits.

      Cons

Work can sometimes be tedious (document review, checking footnotes, etc). Some project managers are better to work with than others. Sometimes have to work long hours or weekends. No compensation for extra hours (this might not be an issue in bigger offices). Pay is below other economic consulting firms.

      Limitless opportunities

      Pros

CRA strongly encourages independence among employees at all levels. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit and are a self-motivated learner, you will find success here. Also, competitive compensation and excellent benefits.

      Cons

Occasionally, but not excessively, we have to work long hours/weekends. I enjoy consulting, so this is expected and does not bother me, but it may not be for you.

      Pros

      -good community of junior staff

      Cons

-very inconsistent management styles, many managers lack good management skills as they are hired for their PhD, not actually their ability to manage projects/staff -a lot of repetitive, menial work -long hours, very inconsistent/last minute requirements of junior staff's time and not a good bonus structure that would actually allow you to be compensated for this -despite what the company may make you think, not great exit opportunities for other jobs as economic consulting is a very niche industry that most people have never heard of
