I have been working at Charles River Development full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very challenging, so much responsibility even if you have no experience. Hire very pedigree, looks great on paper. You have a lot of variability day to day, you'll never do be stuck in a hole doing the same thing everyday.

    Cons

You do way more work than you're paid to do. Very resource deprived company, resource shortages everywhere. High turnover. Very high learning curve.

    Advice to Management

Management is pretty terrible. Very flat company, hardly any bureaucracy. They'll let you get eaten alive on a project and leave you for dead.

    Pros

You should consider joining CRD if
    1. It is close to your place of stay or the commute to Burlington is better than your current job.
    2. Working on latest technology is not that critical for you
    3. You are happy working on a tiny piece of a large software product . Most of the work would involve bug fixes or customer focused enhancements/patches.
    4. You hate wearing formals to office. Jeans, sneaker and flower shirts are not a problem.
    5. You like working at least 9 hours a day but don't want to take office work home or spoil your weekends on weekend releases. CRD is well planned and work from home is discouraged.
    6. Above all you would get to learn a lot about finance and financial calculation, processing.
    7. People in general seems to be ok but not a fun atmosphere. Some teams are always very tense. 8. Management is casual and approachable.
    8. Pay is at par with most other financial firms in the area. Benefits are OK (not great).

    Cons

    Don't join CRD if

    1. You know frameworks and some latest technologies and don't want to unlearn or lose touch with technology trends.
    2. You like project management, architecture, high level software design, technology evangelist, senior architect and don't want to do lot of low level coding work all the time.
    2. You expects a software company office to be sophisticated. Kitchens are like dorm kitchen. No automatic coffee (old filter style), No scanner of fax machines, conference rooms are not tidy and shiny like other software firms. Basically no frills or unnecessary expenditure on office environment.
    3. No corporate fuss. No Instant messaging, no intranet portal, no HR or team building activities. You inbox won't be flooded with non work emails.

No java frameworks like spring/hibernate/ibatis/j2ee. No trendy stuff like amazon cloud/functional programming/big data/nosql/spark/akka/scala/groovy/grails/javascript/angular etc. It might change in future but right now everything is bare minimum and very basic. Even use of libraries like apache or google is also prohibited in some teams. It all depends on personal opinion of your lead. Writing clean maintainable code is not factor. The coding best practices here might be opposite of what you might have learned over years or seen at all other places. Can't argue on that. Just follow the rule of the land.

    Advice to Management

Great attitude, there is a great potential to grow. Might look into employee retaining initiatives.

    Pros

Very Smart People. Flexible Schedules. Easy to make real changes within the company from any level.

    Cons

Most employees have families, so there isn't much of an "after work" life.

I have been working at Charles River Development full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is decent and negotiable. . Talented people who are competent in their specific silo of the company. Respected product in the marketplace and significant reinvestment in R&D to keep the sales pipeline deep. Never a shortage of billable work to be done in the professional services group. Most (but not all) managers are humans.

    Cons

What a blatantly uninspiring place to work. Located in a drab office park currently undergoing a mountain of construction. No one smile. No one seems to like being here. People stay because it is hard to match the pay at competitors and even those who might manage to are subject to a 1 year non-compete agreement (non-negotiable.) Very little opportunity to grow into a higher role. Mid and senior level managers are consistently brought in from outside, given their trial, and promptly fired before the year's bonus cycle. This is the type of place that people work for 20 days or 20 years. Cut throat hiring and firing practices. You will most likely be replacing someone who got fed up and quit or was flat out fired.

    Advice to Management

    Let the company go public.

I have been working at Charles River Development full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I've worked as a software developer at Charles River for 10 years, and am very satisfied. The big attraction here is that the quality of staff is quite high. There are many people here who are very good, experienced, software developers. People behave like grown-ups, mutually supportive, without in-fighting and internal political battles. Minimal drama. Not all companies are like that.
The company is stable with well-received popular products.

    Cons

The pro is also a con. If you aren't good at your job, you won't be happy here. I think that explains many of the negative comments in some of the other reviews. The company isn't shy about "out-placing" non-performers.

    Pros

Charles River is a great company filled with very smart people. I am very surprised by some of the reviews I have seen on here, because this is not my experience at all. The product speaks for itself, as it's one of the top in the industry. Charles River is a company that has grown very steadily for over 10 years and it's filled with very good people that have been here for a long time. This is a great place if you're looking for a long term career. It may not be for everyone, but if you're willing to put in dedication and good work, there's many opportunities to grow your career. If you do your job, you'll be successful.

    Cons

Charles River, may have some growing pains here and there, as they look to make the product better, add new products and services, but it's no different from any other company in that regard.

    Advice to Management

    Keep moving forward

    Pros

Stable company with a strong product and a good reputation in the Financial Industry.
Colleagues are exceptionally bright and good to work with. Small team in London so you are involve in more projects. Salary are reasonably high.

    Cons

Management is rigid and old fashion. they wont hesitate to sack you if you disagree with them or if they dont like your vision. there is no investment in employees, either on a professional level or personal development. talent retention isnt great due to a bad management team.

There is no marketing and sales vision or strategy.

    Advice to Management

Hiring great staff comes with a price: they are often opinionated and involved in your business. By closing any window for discussion, you are frustrating more than one department and individual who will look elsewhere to fill their ambition and desire for improvement. Doing the same thing over 30 years is not an achievement

    Pros

No fear of being laid off here. The product is solid and growing, and management is wise in their directive.

    Cons

The culture may not be equivalent to some west coast companies, but I have no complaints. Free coffee, free gym, and an occasional catered breakfast, fruit basket, ice cream truck, and summer cookout meets my expectations. The culture is far from stale.

I worked at Charles River Development full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company location is its biggest selling point.

    Cons

The team manager and directors have the greatest power , with no accountability to anyone, to make the team members life miserable or enjoyable. But most of the times employees get the former experience unless they are subservient to the management.

    Advice to Management

    Sell the company.
