I have been working at Charles River Laboratories full-time

    Pros

Great benefits package including medical/dental/vision insurance, 21 days PTO, employee stock purchase program, tuition reimbursement (after one year).

    Cons

Horrible work\life balance, fairly low starting wage, managers talk a lot about but very little actually gets done, lots of broken promises, don't expect to be able to use much of that PTO, second/third shift workers are unable to participate in employee events.

    Advice to Management

If you really want to lower first-year turnover rates, pay a livable wage.

I have been working at Charles River Laboratories full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, type of work, fellow coworkers, satisfaction of helping clients in drug discovery, ability to transfer to different jobs, one day offerings, aggressive 401k and great type of benefits

    Cons

Very low pay, high work volume that will overwhelm you, benefits are good but increase every year that equal your pay raise, promotions are based on business needs which means you do the job above yours for years without the title, most tech/supervisor/low level management employee bonuses are very low compared to the salary % for directors/upper management.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate your foundation. Take care of the little people. Evolve your jobs and job descriptions to accurately described the hard work people are doing. Promote the deserving people who give everything to the success of their groups not the people who do bare minimum. Remember what the company was like years ago when each employee was valued. Just because the company is growing rapidly doesn't mean you cannot continue something great that was started by a great man- Dr Doc Foster

I have been working at Charles River Laboratories full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The hours and flexibility is one of the only thing keeping me at this job. Also my department has many great people to be around.

    Cons

The base salary and yearly raises are very low and unacceptable for students trying to get out of debt and live on their own.

    Advice to Management

Retain good employees by giving them raises they deserve and get rid of the non team players. Most of the people who have left my department have left due to the low pay and zero recognition for their work.

I have been working at Charles River Laboratories full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You learn a lot! It's a really good place to get experience. Keep under the radar to excel the fastest.

    Cons

There is expected overtime. Watch your back at all times. Some people are very hard to work with. Try to be as detail oriented as possible.

    Advice to Management

Please give management training courses. Many managers have no clue how to talk to their employees and are unprofessional.

    Pros

Great benefits package included health insurance, vision, dental, 401k. Seemingly positive goal oriented organisation with a passion for helping others.

    Cons

Pay was meager with regard to the types of chemical compounds formulations technicians are exposed to and expected to handle responsibly in a substandard laboratory setting. Too many employees in a small laboratory area increased the potential for exposure to toxic substances.

    Advice to Management

Use some of the multi-million dollar budget surplus to build suitable laboratory environment for individuals working with hazardous compounds. Pay employees with four year degrees what they are worth rather than limiting their income and creating a hostile work environment.

    Pros

The employees there are amazing, everyone is friendly and great to be around.

    Cons

The amount of work to how much you get paid, late nights, tons of overtime, no to little communication, employees seen as expendable, not enough supplies for the work.

    Advice to Management

care about your employees more, care about what everyone is saying, actually listen and put this communication to use.
