I have been working at Charles Schwab full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Very hard-working people - Nice and modern campus - The company is growing - Decent vacation and sick package - You get sabbatical - The pay is decent compared to most companies. - It is a good place to work if you are easily satisfied. For those who have a growth mindset will jump after a few years for the reasons below in the “Cons” section.

    Cons

This is based on my personal experience at the company in the STS organization. - Make sure you negotiate your starting salary because it’s very hard to get a raise. Even if your manager rated you “exceed expectations” two years in a row for your annual review, it doesn’t matter. Upper mgmt will downgrade you to meeting expectations. - Promotion is not based on merit. It is based on available budget and... relationships. Having a good manager matters. If you take on more responsibilities and go beyond the scope of your role, it doesn’t mean you will get a raise or a promotion. Your manager can request for it but it goes up to VP/Sr VP for the decision. There are certain orgs you do not want to work in. - Once you are an employee, internal transfer is not that easy to get. Hiring managers tend to hire external candidates. For internal jobs, it will be a lateral transfer. - It is not really an agile organization. The company wants to move in that direction but it’s very slow. Yes you have scrum teams but that is just a shell because mindset is not there yet. Management is resistant to making changes. They talk well BUT no actions. - Based on who is your organization leader is (ex VP, Sr VP, MD, etc) the culture can be very hierarchical, controlling and basically a lack of trust. -

I have been working at Charles Schwab full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Decent benefits and they will pay for your 7 and 63.

    Cons

Toxic culture, managing directors are hardly personal and only seem to be concerned with their own career. There has been a lot of reorganization happening mainly because peoples are getting fired or leaving. There is no incentive for going above and beyond, people manager play favorites.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing favorites. When I first came to Schwab, life was pretty good. After multiple changes in leadership, morale has dwindled to zero. Promote people based on their ability. People managers need to actually listen to their employees and do what they can to develop them. Many leaders here are just “yes people” and managing directors and VPs hardly know what is really going on. It’s challenging that many of the... leaders are in San Francisco, so they never get to see what is actually going on. Maybe it’s time to overhaul the middle management. More and more of your top producers will continue to leave if these issues are not addressed.

I have been working at Charles Schwab full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

People are "Schwab Nice." Pretty professional environment in general. Benefits are pretty decent and in line with competitors. This is a good place if you're nearing the end of your career, but young people are unlikely to stay for more than 5 years. Lot of good management up at the top. Many of the VPs and SVPs are very personable and willing to help. Problems start at the MD levels.

    Cons

Old school company and slow to change. Promotions are usually done level by level and it is difficult to move up quickly. Much of middle management is only concerned about their own career growth and afraid to challenge the status quo. There are certain areas of the company where sexism is rampant. Not a bad place to be early in your career, but not if you want to be in the fast lane for growth. Managers do not... really care about your growth, so you have to be proactive about what you want, which can become exhausting. You'll find yourself asking for the same thing three or four times before there's any movement.

    Advice to Management

SVPs and VPs need to hire better middle management. MDs are way to detached from the individual contributors.

Schwab offers great benefits and they will pay for licensing.
