I worked at Charleston County Government part-time

    Pros

Great hours, location, and benefits. The people are eager and helpful. I have found that the best way to do well is to keep a low profile, but don't be afraid to speak.

    Cons

At time I felt like my co-workers were there for only a job and not the experience nor the mission. The budget can also be a bit complex because we couldn't finish certain projects due to limited budgets.

    Advice to Management

In all honesty, it was a good experience and I would recommend it to others.

I worked at Charleston County Government full-time

    Pros

    Good basic benefits: health/dental
Transparency in pay: make sure to ask where you would fall in the hiring range to make that clear before they make you an offer
The amount of paid holidays off

    Cons

The largest con is that each dept has its own leader and there own way of doing things so your experience working here can vary greatly depending on what dept you work in and the temperament of that person in charge.

    Advice to Management

HR: conduct anonymous employee surveys to get feeback on leadership

I have been working at Charleston County Government full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great coworkers, good hours, decent leave time

    Cons

HORRIBLE department supervisor, extremely low department morale, high department turn over. Our department supervisor continuously berates, degrades, and humiliates lower -level staff to the degree that almost everyone is looking for employment elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Please hire managers who actually have management experience. Please take seriously the concerns of employees who are stuck in the trenches, and are actually doing work for individuals like the one mentioned above. People like this RUIN otherwise great institutions.

Annual leave the paid time off is great.

    Cons

Nepitism, and the good ol boy network permeates thru this local government office which leads to unqualified workers.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Some of the people are really nice, and they provide a lot of insight on how to grow both professionally and personally.

    Cons

Sometimes getting a job here or a promotion isn't about your experience or qualifications, but who you know.

    Advice to Management

Treat everybody the same, regardless of connections.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Charleston County Government full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Generally easy job for mediocre pay. You can easily go to work and collect your pay check without really any incentive or pressure to do (any) work.

    Cons

Very little room to move up. There is a saying that gov employees die clinging to their desks and this is certainly true. Also serving the public regarding taxes can make you hate your life; as the constituents can treat you terribly.

    Advice to Management

Hire more young professionals. Update business efficiency models.
