I worked at Charleston County School District full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

District office jobs tend to pay well as they go by the grade and step process of the state. One learns invaluable skills and lessons albeit through a terrible work culture.

    Cons

Dysfunction has been allowed to function at CCSD for decades, and is evidenced by the way department leaders mismanage their teams and projects, brush information under the rug, and punish those who advocate for improvement/change or speak up in any way. ER protects the "company" and those who speak out end up gone sooner or later. The district is plagued by multiple lawsuits, settlements, difficulty with many other negative news stories that are constantly being uncovered. There is not trust for this administration or the board by most members of the community. Perceived connections to the local list of power brokers make leadership even more questionable.

    Advice to Management

Found an Ombuds department for employee grievances and give it the respect and due diligence it deserves, use your communications budget to build great communication with your staff, teacher and parent pipelines and forget about billboards and fancy reports for now, scrutinize past doings and budgets of your leadership team and clean house.
