I have been working at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Teaching children and if lucky enough to be at a good school, the school environment can be positive. Knowing that the work I put in helps my students even if the scores don't reflect that.

    Cons

    Lack of support
No true cut-off from work and personal life
The stress on student scores and lack of acknowledging classroom effort.
Behaviors are out of control and there is no true behavior system in place.

I worked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    The students are the best

    Cons

Working for administrators who behave like megalomaniacs and a school system that supports their behaviors all the while not supporting the work and effort that teachers put into their "careers."

    Terrible pay and benefits

    Lack of professional respect

    Advice to Management

Treat teachers like the educated professionals that they are and don't forget to pay them a living wage that is indicative of their professional worth.

    Pros

Permits a balance of work/family life; provides a meaningful opportunity to impact children's lives educationally, socially, and emotionally.

    Cons

Little autonomy and flexibility during the workday; general perception that paraprofessionals are undervalued by teaching staff and administration.

    Advice to Management

Become more sensitive to the inferior status that paraprofessionals feel by encouraging inclusion and equal engagement among staff.

I worked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great staff and location to work. Schedule makes it easy to work as a busy mom. Flexible hours and summers off.

    Cons

Low pay, state determines raises for employees. Very little negative to say, teachers are great to work with as long as you respect your principle and admin staff.

    Advice to Management

Do not have very much advice except that they should pay teachers more for how much work they do for the rising adults in our community.

I have been working at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

some schools are better than others

    Cons

Being harassed and bullied. Having to "sit in" on meetings not pertaining to my work ethics but co-worker's and made to feel as well as told incompetent because of my race. Also told I can't comprehend because of my race. Threatened.

    Advice to Management

HR should "police" their Principals and assistant principals and provide them with TRAINING on how to TALK to their faculty and staff

    Pros

Summer and winter break are nice.

    Cons

As a new teacher you receive very little support. I started in 2009 as a high school science teacher. I had a "mentor" who really didn't do much.

At the high school level it is really hit or miss as far as your experience goes. So much varies between high and low achieving schools. Who your principal and administration are greatly impact how much you enjoy your work. When I started you couldn't transfer to a new school.

You'll work like crazy for little compensation.

I worked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Your day to day experience will depend way less on CMS as an employer than on the administrators and teachers with whom you work. There's a lot of schools in the Charlotte area, the one that I worked at was full of wonderful people.

    Cons

CMS (and NC schools in general) seem to be more standardized test focused than average. The state tests are in May, which makes students and teachers alike treat the last 2 weeks of the year as irrelevant.

    Pros

Great school - including students and staff.
Great resources from CTE department staff
    Allows for individuality

    Cons

Would like to have earlier hours
Educators should be paid much more for all of the work we're required to complete

    Advice to Management

    Nothing at this time
