I have been working at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Best public school pay in North Carolina, lots of professional development opportunities, friendly teachers, some unique magnet programs

    Cons

The system itself frustrates efforts to hold students accountable, low morale among teachers, lots of standardized testing, excessive bureaucracy

    Advice to Management

Be willing to talk about what really bothers teachers. The decisions and policies that make teaching difficult never seem to get an honest conversation, much less actually resolved.

    Pros

Overall CMS is a great district to work for. They are focused on student equity and make an effort to utilize innovative methods to educate all students. As a senior level employee I always felt my work was valued and enjoyed working with dedicated and talented colleagues.

    Cons

The leadership churn in schools and in central office makes it difficult to sustain effective reforms. I also think that improving teacher compensation needs to be a greater priority.
