I worked at Charming Shoppes full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary was ok and benefit package was good, especially maternity benefits. One thing to keep in mind is that is that management is salaried and expected to work a minimum of 45 hours a week.

    Cons

Corporate has no loyalty to their employees. Its is all about politics. The company makes it very clear that you are replaceable at anytime.

    Advice to Management

    Treat your people better

I worked at Charming Shoppes full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you work hard you will be promoted. Make sure you get in good with management. Company was recently bought out so maybe corporate structure will change?

    Cons

Review process was a joke. 0-5% per year but it's almost impossible to get more than 2%. Computer systems were ridiculously slow with them implementing modern programs on systems that should have been upgraded five years ago.

    Advice to Management

Pay more to those who offer loyalty and do a good job.

I worked at Charming Shoppes full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There is an in-house cafe, excellent health and disability benefits, a matching 401K plan and a value put on recognizing individual talent achievements. Plenty of money is spent on company resources and equipment, accommodating employee needs, holding parties and celebrations, and encouraging continuing eduction and training programs.

    Cons

Since the company was acquired in 2012 by Ascena Retail Group, they've eliminated most of the brands and subdivisions and laid off half their workforce. In turn, this has scared a lot of the existing workers into leaving the company which has lead to current employees taking on additional roles and responsibilities to fill the vacancies. In turn, it has lead to a decline in work life balance which now results in many dissatisfied employees working one too many hours.

    Advice to Management

The company likes to hand out empty promotions to make up for the extra responsibilities, so you'll find there are a lot of unnecessary "managers" only managing one person or no one at all. This leads to lots of individual micromanaging and unnecessary hands in the pot when it comes to making decisions. In turn, this awkward structure results in one too many meetings about well, meetings. They love to hold meetings.

    Pros

Long term as long as did your job and drove biz

    Cons

Transition to new company not fair, missed out on a lot of great talent. Hate to see that, would never work for any of the other divisions treat people unfairly.

    Advice to Management

Numerous managers committed until the end out of loyalty to upper management and respect for years of employment only to be left without jobs that are available within the company, due to the way we were passed over we would turn down if offered now just needed someone to know how much great talent will never walk through your doors again!

I worked at Charming Shoppes full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I think the most positive experiences at Charming Shoppes was the ability to move up the ladder and be promoted within the company. The location, cafateria and employee benefits were also great.

    Cons

The biggest con to working at this company in this position was the number of hours worked and overtime needed in order to finish the workload. I worked an extremely large amount of overtime without pay due to workload. I did have one assistant, but clearly it should have been set-up like the merchandising side with an Assistant and Assosicate support staff. Another con is how a lot of the new younger set of employees coming in from school thought they owned the place and did everything in their power to talk about you behind your back to the point of workplace bullying and schemed to get your position.

    Advice to Management

Human Resources needs to listen more to their employees when there are negative things going on their workplace and take action instead of sitting on their butts and doing nothing.
