Many Challenges, Many Changes, room to advance in certain areas.

Raises have been low compared with other retailers through the years

I have been working at Charming Shoppes part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Large company with some opportunity for advancement. Offer holiday pay to all employees. Good retention rates. Generally supportive district mangers.

    Cons

At store level hours fluctuate significantly through out the year. There are no sales bonus available to part-time leaders for making store sales goals despite the fact that many PTSL's word only a few hours shy of the 40 per week mark.

  4. "Very demanding and stressful, management only there to criticize, treat employees badly and commonly lie."

    Pros

Will let you take a day off if needed, but not on Monday or Tuesday

    Cons

Poor upper management. Particularly HRIS and Payroll. No communication unless it's to criticize. Low, low pay. Management lies to employees on a regular basis to get what they want out of you. They take away your spirit and self worth.

    Advice to Management

They really need to replace senior and upper management. These issues have been going on for a very long time under the present management. It will not improve until somebody here sees where the problems really lie. Outsourcing to India has created it's own set of issues, but has gotten better over time. Problems in Payroll and HRIS are not getting better and will not until something changes.

    Pros

Charming Shoppes offers an excellent associate discount. At least once a month, they receive 50% off of their entire purchase. As most new products roll into stores, associates are given a free one to own and try.

    Cons

Charming Shoppes has been hit hard with the recession. The stores are running on bare bones coverage, without enough payroll to keep store standards.

    Advice to Management

Corporate should consider how the stores are affected, with every decision they make. Corporate should also recruit more from the field to get a better understanding of store operations.

    Pros

Location is great, Ability for Flex Time Hours is a great benefit, Opportunity to adjust Summer Schedule (Summer Hours program) is great.

    Cons

No current job security due to poor sales and poor high level decision making. Overall morale is low. Too many jobs are outsourced to India which causes internal frustration.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to stop looking "outside" company for talent. Start promoting and training from within. Instead of cutting lower level staff to save money, need to re-evaluate management layout (too many Chiefs and not enough Indians)

    Pros

Good employees, understanding management. They are good with time off and scheduleing conflicts. Some good coustomers as well that are regular shoppers

    Cons

Upper management dosent really work, most things would not get done if it was left up to the store manager. The company wants you to be very pushy with coustomers

    Pros

Opporunity to work any day of the week. Stores close no later than 8PM.

    Cons

Associate store discount policies keep changing. Part Time associates receive almost no benefits but consitute a majority of employees. .

    Advice to Management

Senior corporate management never show up at the stores. Mid-level management is very pushy and demanding of store personnel. As a former chief union steward, I've considered organizing the non-management store associates.
