I worked at Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I got a scholarship ($500) after submitting a short essay and having the approval of my managers. Hours are flexible with school schedule. There are programs to become management, but they only choose two students out of all student workers, and it is highly competitive.

    Cons

Even though I worked there for four years, they would not raise my wages over $8.35 because I was a student employee. My manager, who delegated all of his work to me was getting $11.50 an hour, so if you apply and want raises that correlate with your experience, apply as a full time employee, not as a student. Your experience will only get you more pay if you quit and then reapply as a full time employee.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so stingy with pay, especially when limiting employees to less than 30 hours per week when you are understaffed.

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to grow your understanding on food service as a business. You can learn food service basics and get a foundation to food service operations.

    Cons

Communication could be improved between upper level management and associates. Many times associates and unit leads do not know what is going on with the company and changes are unexpected.

    Advice to Management

    Consider views of associates.

    Cons

Upper management sometimes makes it a very tense place to work. The turnover rate is very high.

    Advice to Management

Make sure to frequently say "thank you" or "job well done" to all employees. A more formal training package about the ins and outs of each position would be very helpful.

    Pros

Very flexible hours, understanding about school schedules, make friends your age, free meals.

    Cons

Poor management, many employees quit because of overworking and the company abusing its employees, often asked to do things not within your job duties, a lot of cleaning, extreme unfairness between employees

    Advice to Management

Hire more people so that when others cannot work, there is a backup, not forced work.

    Pros

Part of a region of directors, managers, and chefs that help each other.
Company-provided purchase card and cell phone
Encouraged to run your unit (or multi-units) like a business owner.
    Challenging, fast-paced, multi-tasking work environment.
Impressive sector of the Compass Group Company

    Cons

The company (Chartwells) is too big for its britches.
The company is fractured in its operation, network and support
I personally did not receive the onboarding training that I was expecting (in-writing)
Directors put in up to 80 hours per week. ( I averaged 60)
The accounting and management expectation is completely different from any management position I've had before
Salary is approximately $5K-$10K LESS THAN the equivalent job title in other parts of the country. (This job pays the same as an executive chef for a small retirement facility)

    Advice to Management

Either hire extremely-experienced multi-unit general managers, regional directors, or business owners, or provide proper training along with reasonable performance expectations.
