I have been working at Chatham Financial full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Chatham is a great Company to work for, very open and collaborative environment, decent pay and benefits, great talented, smart, and humble people.

    Cons

Because the Company is focused on very deep expertise, sometimes the role can be somewhat limited in terms of scope and experience.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the focus on being a different type of company to retain and attract top talent that resonates with the purposes and values.

I worked at Chatham Financial full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Casual atmosphere. Casual dress code. Tends to hire smart people who are generally good to work with. Good facilities and events; work-life balance is decent.

    Cons

Expectations are unclear as well as measures of success. Merit and potential often ignored in favor of who is friends with who (whic often means bros take priority while female staff are forgotten and unmentored). No structure means years with no clear path to advancement, & management has no accountability.

    Advice to Management

Admit that Chatham has reached a size where the flat structure doesn't work and actually function based on some kind of policy and internal logic. Take employee concerns seriously. Actually have an action plan and follow through when negative patterns emerge, instead of hoping the problem will time out. Make expectations and success paths clear and reward exceptional performance accordingly. Have the difficult... conversations when they need to be had. Fix the health care ( everyone sees through the "savings and personal responsibility" rhetoric as a cost-saving copout ). Identify and nurture potential of EVERYONE, not just the managers' favorite buddies.

I worked at Chatham Financial full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Bright group of people that really want to change markets. Every day is a challenge and the opportunities to learn are vast.

    Cons

Employees more concerned with their own egos than they are working as a team to efficiently and effectively get items accomplished for the client. Had a Big 4 environment and work expectation but not the salaries, benefits, or flexibility that goes along with Big 4. No sense of consistent guidelines or processes, so there was very "Wild West" and chaotic feel to the office. Felt there were constant fire drills... and stress, due to the lack of processes, governance, and accountability. There were a few key people that were bottlenecks that were extremely overworked while others slipped by with the bare minimum which was extremely frustrating to watch first hand. Finally, I don't feel the company ever actually acted on internal problems. The same conversation would be had for months on end with no follow through and no resolution, so the problem chain seemed constant with no clear path on how to make issues better longer term.

    Advice to Management

Lose the ego, stop name dropping (we get it, you know a lot of people at the SEC and FASB) and focus on actually providing results for your clients and employees and not just theoretically talking about what you could do, find a better way to spread workloads across people and groups or deal with the repercussions of burn out and turnover, realize that people will need to set boundaries and can't work 24/7 without... the salary and benefits that go along with that expectation.

    Pros

The culture is amazing with a focus on openness, learning and teamwork.

    Cons

Because it is a flat organization structure there is no clear ladder to climb.

I have been working at Chatham Financial full-time

    Pros

Lots of freedom. Book clubs, hack weeks, a free coffee machine, standing desks - this place tries to make you feel comfortable. It also lets you work on what interests you. Your immediate boss truly cares if you're happy at work.

    Cons

Productivity is very low. Chatham seems to have adopted a low stress, low productivity, low expectations, low salary culture. I've never heard a manager reprimand an employee. This culture is pushing high-achievers out because there's little incentive to perform past expectations. The lack of upward mobility also contributes to this.

    Advice to Management

Please make a conscious effort to incentivise employees who perform above expectations. Having a conversation about poor performance might hurt feelings, but it sets a standard of excellence. This company can do so much better.

I worked at Chatham Financial full-time for less than a year

    Pros

-Generous salaries and bonus structures. 401K 1-1 matching is fantastic, once you're around long enough to accrue it. -Smart people who are kind and generally knowledgeable about their little niche of finance. -Weekly company-wide meetings are nice, if a bit empty in terms of actual content.

    Cons

-Disorganized company. Lack of hierarchy sounds cool but in reality just means no one knows who is doing what. -The "Chatham Way" is to start and end meetings late. This same ideology guides the information (or lack thereof) that is disseminated to ground-level staff. -Staff is disproportionately family-men, ex-military, and religious folks. Almost entirely white. In a semi-diverse little town, it's startling.... -Speaking of the town, Kennett Square is in the middle of nowhere! -Frat-like culture among the predominately-male younger employees. -10+ hours staring at a computer doing repetitive basic tasks is often due to poor communication between business and tech divisions (and the divide is deep). -Little variety or room for growth; prepare for repetitious niche work.

    Advice to Management

Your management team is representing the demographics and personality of this company 15 years ago. If nothing changes, there will be no company 15 year from now.

I worked at Chatham Financial full-time

    Pros

The compensation is competitive and in line with market rates. The company tries to encourage creativity and a relaxed atmosphere by allowing employees to dress casually to work.

    Cons

While Chatham is very good at what it does, it is a very niche area in finance. If you looking for cross-training opportunities in the various areas of finance or just something more substantial or meaningful, this company is not for you. Also, if you care about a diverse work environment, know that Chatham is a predominantly white company. Location wise, it is located in the mushroom country of Chester county,... about 45 miles from Philadelphia.

I have been working at Chatham Financial full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Beautiful campus. Standing desks. Casual dress. Smart people.

    Cons

Very unclear on what the company goals are. Different sectors seem to be on different paths and there is no clear communication on how or even if the company is going to grow beyond where it is now. Chatham offers certain people a lot of flexibilty that is often taken advantage of and as a result you have a select few people who seem to carry the majority of the work load.

    Advice to Management

My perception is that there are too many people who are not actually doing any real work. You have a lot of book clubs, special events (that people spend hours of comapny time on), and other things going on that are not resulting in revenue. I think it is great to want to have a fun culture and values, but I'm unsure on how Chatham will be able to continue to employee as many people as it does now without making... some changes.
