    Challenging, Rewarding, Spiritual Work

    Pros

Phenomenal work culture. Team atmosphere with great training and supportive management. "YOU-first ministry." They acknowledge the need for and encourage work-life balance plus the occasional mental health day. Faith-filled environment. Meals and many meaningful moments provided!

    Cons

On the frontlines dealing with homelessness, you will have many challenging interactions. A portion of our guests have severe and persistent mental health issues. Others are chemically dependent. Many live with trauma. It is a setting much different than typical fields in the workforce. Other positions at the ministry less so. Still, there is a prevailing feeling of serving the greater good, helping the helpless, and that--whatever the position-- it is more of a calling than an occupation.

    High turnover, stressful

Jan 29, 2021 - Advocate in Toledo, OH

    Pros

    Pay and benefits are decent.

    Cons

Cherry Street Mission has a high turnover rate because of the leadership there. We was all hopeful with the new CEO but it’s the four Vice Presidents that run the show and do it terribly. One in particular has fired more good employees with high potential instead of being a leader and leading them. There is high stress, lack of support from most leaders, and little direction. In addition to many employees getting fired, many will quit which leads to holes in the schedule and the same employees getting burnt out because they are asked to step in when the managers are all working from home because of COVID. The VP’s and the Managers need to support their staff and SHOW UP! Cherry Street Mission needs to give their employees better training and support. Without both everyone suffers, ESPECIALLY the guests. The guests build trust and relationship with the staff and then the staff just disappear. It’s not fair to the guests who need the support and consistency everyday. The pay is good for entry level which is why some will stay. But with the high turnover it’s obvious that it’s just not worth it.
