I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time for less than a year

    Pros

9/80 schedule (every other friday is off) is great. You can move to a variety of positions in many different locations early on. Hard working but generally laid-back atmosphere. Lots of training and opportunities to learn from more experienced people once you get used to the system. As of 2013, they are eager to send engineers to Saudi Arabia (other international locations exist as well) if you are interested in living internationally.

    Cons

Because they are growing so quickly, sometimes the organization and direction for incoming engineers feels sloppy and underdeveloped. You must be very pro-active and work outside of your responsiblities if you want to make the most of your time.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in having structures for incoming engineers. Specifically more job shadowing.

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical

    Pros

9/80 Work Schedule, every other Friday off (when not asked to work it), 401k & pension.

    Cons

Excessive micromanagement. Little training offered for new employees due to coping with the pace of change. Lack of commitment to career growth to retain the talent the company has. Work life balance is given, but at the price of not advancing in your career. Working unnormal has become an expected normal. There is the sale of Diversity & Inclusion the sale of Career Ladder Growth & Opportunity, but there is no follow through on it.

    Advice to Management

Do not hinder employees who do not want to work constantly from growing in their careers. Stop talking a big talk to develop current employees, but ulitmaltely take contradicotry actions. Develop a better training for new employees to prevent thier being set up for failure. Hire more people to accomodate the rate of growth.

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical

    Pros

9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off), 401k profit sharing and contribution matching, pension, high salary relative to other engineering fields, job stability, relocation compensation

    Cons

Work is not very exciting or challenging, guidance for new employees is lacking, a few of the locations are in "undesirable" locations (Borger, Orange, Port Arthur)

    Advice to Management

A few managers are more concerned with their work than actually managing their employees

    Pros

Welcomes the new generation with energy Good Salaries Good Benefits

    Cons

They forget diversity and inclusion, they have done big efforts in this arena, however they are not inclusive at all with the minorities, Hispanics - discrimination based not only in the ethnicity also in the accent of your English - Management is crazy.....Micromanage is their culture at least at HQ. They have 9/80 work schedule, that does not work for the level of stress that you are exposed to Leadership is arrogant and mean Their success depends on the gas prices....

I worked at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great brand 9/80 work schedule + competitive salary and benefits (within chemical industry)

    Cons

In their own words this company is too lean and too mean, managers do not have leadership skills, they do not know the basics, and the HR department does not do anything about that. Actually they are (HR) the most unskilled people. New management in the surface, but the same old characters in the bottom. Weird culture, or non culture, and forget about core values, they do not exist. Lack off development opportunities, and the HR employee development department its only a name, its manager only is aware of senior executives, does not have any offering for the people that generate the revenue or is in the front line. The only thing that you can breath is fear

    Pros

    9/80 work schedule, Benefits package

    Cons

Unskilled management, HQ location is the worst place to work. They roll out fake employee opinion survey, supposed to be anonymous, but they with their vendor deliver the survey with an individual IP address and password. They pretent to be a Best place to work, so far from that, we they have not defined core values. No training, no development, culture of punishment, no inclusion. At the of each week the only thing that you can say is " I survived" even with the 9/80. Too bad CPChem

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

9/80 work schedule. Most folks take their day off consistently. Work/Life balance recognized though management-level folks definitely do more Company has a sincere safety focus above all else Growing Company with good financial outlook and performance

    Cons

Not well established engineering career path, careers not "managed" well. Most folks are largely on their own. Not good technical career path for those who are not chosen as leaders and/or that do not wish to supervise

    Advice to Management

Need better career and performance management, but otherwise doing a good job.

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical

    Pros

Flexible 9/80 work schedule Small enough company it's possible to have visibility with Senior Management early on Big enough company jobs are secure Multiple locations in the Houston area

    Cons

Number of "managed moves" limit advancement opportunities for other job - seeking employees Some manufacturing sites have Union - management relationship issues

    Advice to Management

Move out mid level managers who are ineffective, don't just move them up! To the CEO- continue open communication with employees and maintain safety as #1 focus!

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

9/80, several locations, good safety culture

    Cons

Limited career opportunities; Entry level management positions really only available for the favored few who will also often move up quickly, and whose careers are actively managed by mid/upper management. Health plans structured such that high deductible plan is cheapest option, but has fairly high deductibles (9k in network, separate 12k? out of network, and they don't cross apply). Instituted yearly charge for having spouse on medical if they could get it through their employer. Overtime expected for many, and compensation for salaried employees for the extra hours works out to a fraction of their normal hourly-equivalent rate. Depending on the site, tend to run fairly understaffed.

    Advice to Management

Technical shouldn't be a dead-end career, and isn't seen that way by competitors given the number of peers having left recently . It's nice to see some people actively managed (managed moves), but most of us don't get that kind of forward looking career guidance and are left to feel stagnant and forgotten, if not actively told to stay in position. The health benefit cost increases are becoming egregious.
