I worked at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are actually a lot of very good people in this company including operators, engineers, supervisors, managers, and executives. 9/80 schedules and total compensation.

    Cons

Unfortunately, there are some very vindictive senior managers and Executive team members in this company. They pay you to speak the truth and challenge processes to make the company better, but be aware that the repercussions of doing just that can be career ending. Several highly dedicated people left this company because they were targeted and crucified for fighting for what was right in order to try to make this company better. Unfortunately, making improper and inaccurate judgments about people will prevent this average company from becoming a great company.

    Advice to Management

Believe in your people, trust their performance history, don't penalize for speaking the truth and be willing to recognize the vindictive nature of some of your senior leaders.

I worked at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Never missed a paycheck. Worked with some brilliant people in some beautiful locales. Learned new processes and equipment. Led a wonderful, hardworking, very diverse staff.

    Cons

Human Resources team is very shady. Many promises from the initial job offer were reneged upon after the job was accepted. Laid me off after promising a job upon repatriation.

    Advice to Management

I was laid off after working 2 successful projects back to back, then being promoted to successfully supervise 2 departments. I gave my all to your company, but in return I was shown 0 loyalty. In order to maintain a quality staff, you must begin to show loyalty, express value towards your employees, and remain true to your promises. I was quite disappointed in my experience with the lack of regard for the human element. I was never given an opportunity to complete an exit interview in order to provide my side of the story. Makes it obvious they don't care about the person or their input.

I have been working at Chevron Phillips Chemical full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A multi-billion dollar company with < 10,000 employees worth as much as competitors with > 30,000 employees, so there is great employee compensation. A high priority on safety allows those whose jobs involve high-risk tasks to feel comfortable and secure. Even in the current economy, there are still hiring opportunities.

    Cons

Very lean, advancement opportunities are slim-to-none currently. There is no clear-cut career path for advancement, either.

    Advice to Management

Provide a clear-cut career path for those who are fresh in their career.

    Pros

For its industry, CPChem is a smaller company and is extremely profitable as it produces incredible amounts of product. Opportunities for Engineers here are abundant as they continue to grow at a very fast pace. 9/80 schedule is great.

    Cons

The growth and retirement of baby-boomers could present issues later in the knowledge handover. The pay is above average but not as good as come of its competitors. They lose some young employees simply for higher salaries attained at other jobs...this doesn't need to happen.

    Advice to Management

Continue trying to retain good people and hire experienced workers. Be careful not to pigeon-hole new guys in a role they can't escape just because there is a company need.
