I have been working at Chicago Board Options Exchange full-time

    Pros

Work life balance is great, friendly Midwest polite coworkers, nice HR events, decent benefits, great location, looks good on a resume

    Cons

The company is in the process of acquiring another exchange and you can feel the misery as soon as you walk through the door. Many are concerned about their jobs and there has been little done to ease those fears. Unless you're one of the few with an office you're just another chump in a cubicle and your voice really doesn't matter. If you have the right manager you can have a good experience here but overall, you're not really seen or valued as an individual. Very top down and hierarchical, old fashioned and unwilling to change. Hostile to women, who only make up a third of the company.

    Advice to Management

Diversify your upper management. Provide clear paths for advancement. Don't lie to new hires and say they can grow there. It's a place for lifers, might as well be the government.

I worked at Chicago Board Options Exchange full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good salary, some very sharp co-workers, decently located in regards to public transportation

    Cons

This company rewards mediocrity, the environment is something from the early 80s (we're talking cubicles here!), the environment is not supportive for women or minorities in technology, it is very much 'Wolf of Wall Street' culture - you're either one of the 'good old boys' or you simply do not exist. the CEO calls the environment 'innovative' and is sadly being fed some bologna by upper management that has completely lost touch with their employees and its sad - he can't even see that his employees are laughing at him every single time he uses the word "innovative". There is not a single innovative person or thought in that company. Or if they get someone in who truly has great ideas - the motivation will be SUCKED out of them by the end of 2 years just because it will probably take that long to get even a PoC approval

    Advice to Management

You sold out your entire systems division in order to make a few $$s, anyone that is good - is already looking for another job. you'll be left with the ones that are highly trained to do their jobs - no more. good luck

    Pros

Good work life balance and great co-workers.

    Cons

Coin of experience is low. Recent merger has added 1.6 billion in debt. They will be cutting staff, mostly IT staff to help pay the new mortgage.

    Advice to Management

Treat IT as a strategic asset rather than a cost center.
