I have been working at Chicago State University full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Mission as PBI Location Community served

    Cons

The following are DEEPLY rooted in the failing mess that is, unfortunately, CSU. This school hit a new low under Wayne Watson, following his long-running tenure over the patronage farm that is Chi City Colleges. Lots of unqualified folks work here and if anyone dares to ask about hiring practices, accountability, outcomes, etc, they are considered racist or tomming. The perennial complaint is that there is no money... to explain the normalized single-digit graduation rates. Probably the biggest tragedy in the state system given the enormous potential a university has within that particular community to do life-altering work that has both academic and policy impact. Crickets. All these mostly incompetent people do (most of them come here with minimal to no experience in college administration/student affairs) is make sure them and their friends get state benefits and keep smart, accomplished people who will raise the bar, out. I know. I’ve been watching them for years: Incompetent staff Cronyism Nepotism Lack of accountability Divestment from community impact Fraudulent student affairs Poorest retention rates of state colleges Poorest graduation rates of state colleges

    Advice to Management

-Flush the system -Make Human Resources and hiring managers accountable to retention strategies with hiring -Place an emphasis on hiring people who actually have experience and accomplishments over knowing an elected official, being in a social Greek org, etc. -Evaluate all candidates for program management and higher roles for competence, experience, ability to meet CSU commitment to retention and graduation CSU... is in life support and, unfortunately, with very good cause. Anyone in leadership who is unwilling to do the heavy lifting to clean this place up is complicit in the fraud and just drawing taxpayer benefits.
