I worked at Children's Council of San Francisco (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great mission and programs, good work ethic and sense of community among managers and staff, strong supportive HR, competitive benefits, good location for transit.

    Cons

Turnover at top and among staff, without a lot of mobility for middle managers,
    Tension in union relations.
Some programs struggle with funding and funder/stakeholder relations.
Good wages for a nonprofit, but still a nonprofit.

    Advice to Management

Put more faith in your people.
Don't lose sight of mission and vision.
    Listen more, dictate less.
Don't be afraid of leading social change.
Pay attention to cultural competency and issues of race and privilege.

    Pros

Excellent Benefits Package, opportunities for growth and education about social programs. Great staff and management to work with.

    Cons

Lack of structure in Senior Management which is filled with bureaucracy and politics that overall effects the procedures of staff. The agency needs strong leaders to make fair decisions for the well being of the agency. Several managers operate on procedures and practices that were effective in previous years.

    Advice to Management

New Executive Director should manage the Senior Managers closely to ensure programs and procedures are administered more properly. Perhaps contract an agency to ensure that Senior Managers are administering their contracts properly.
