I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management is accommodating and nice to work with. The pay is better than many area hospitals ( still not great but better).

    Cons

Very cliquey place to work on the units. Nurses are rude to each other unless they're friends.
Nursing staff has a very self righteous attitude all around. No team feel. Insurance is expensive and not very good.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very smart people, organization is a top 10 hospital in the nation. Prestigious place to be employed. Enjoy working in a teaching environment.

    Cons

Not a healthy work environment. Lots of turn over. Low pay for experience. Management is difficult to work with and lots of chatter behind the scenes.

    Advice to Management

Transparency, better pay, more grateful for all the overtime and extra shifts people work. More awareness of how all these pieces of the job are affecting your employees.

I worked at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The clinical staff are great and it is very mission driven organization. In the end it is all about the kids.

    Cons

Leadership can not make decisions and so end up doing everything and nothing well. Communication is limited and politics are significant. Leadership disconnected from people who actually do the work (both clinical and administrative). Everything is done at the last minute.

    Advice to Management

Make the tough choices, people will respect you for it.

I worked at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Wonderful 401k and matching, close access to retirement supervisor on site and a phone call away. Wendy is amazing.
    Wellness incentive for non-smokers.
My experience with managers is that they work with you and other staff members to be flexible with time off.
    Wonderful co-workers.

    Cons

The most important thing at hospitals is safety. Over the last two years, I have felt strongly that staffing has been pulled too thin. It is very difficult to double check all orders and special protocols, help other staff, and attend to patients' and families' needs.
It is also difficult to get more than one 20 minute break through out an entire 12-14 hour shift.

The Clinical ladder and pay scale isn't based on experience or clinical skills. It is based off of working on silly, mirco-managed projects on your free time. Committees are also an important part of this, which tend to be inconvenient for nurses whom live far away, have child care needs, or work the night shift.
New grads no longer receive a pay bump ofter orientation. "Due to 600 applicants for 1 job opening, Childrens no longer need to be competitive in pay."

    Advice to Management

Advocate for increased staffing of RNs and CNAs.
Make sure charge roles go to those that help out on the floor and can run a code blue with confidence.
Children's is a non-profit hospital which means it gets to invest in itself, lets start with the RNs.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado as an intern (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many top notch individuals to work with, many experts in their fields. Close proximity to academic center. Nice atmosphere for patients and family.

    Cons

There seemed to be a shift to more corporate behavior since the name change and 100 year celebrations. Now, working here is much like many other large companies i.e. treat longtime employees poorly, retain and recruit more management. For example, they took away bus passes which were included as part of our benefits. Only the neediest employees utilize them (including a few environmentally conscious folks). Losing bus passes was like getting a 5-10% pay cut for most employees that used them. At the same time, the hospital required that departments double the numbers in management so that there are a fewer employees per manager. I couldn't schedule a meeting with my manager for 2 years since, didn't seem to make a difference.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The hospital's goals are admirable. They provide a lot of training.

    Cons

The workday for M-F salaried staff is 8:00 to 5:00, but most of the time we are too busy to take a lunch break or leave till 6 or 7 pm; then they schedule meetings to start at 7:30 or 7:00. Meetings and emails take up too much of the work week, and they acknowledge all this but they are just happy to get people to work more for no extra money. Managers are not being replaced when they leave their positions, and everyone is simply expected to do more with less. In their attempt to slash the budget ("resource stewardship"), they are reducing many benefits and expect that staff will stay because of the hospital's reputation and their difficult hiring processes that give the impression that they are selective.

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging, be more respectful of your staff. Stop forcing people to work 60-hour weeks.

I have been working at Children's Hospital Colorado full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The mission is great and gives staff tremendous pride. Lots of great staff. Really nice facility.

    Cons

The mission allows an attitude that it is a privilege to work here and management takes advantage of that. Senior management using resource stewardship as a strategy to take things away from staff. Senior management doesn't trust the managers so has put in place cumbersome processes to replace positions and get needed resources. Need to CFO approval for minor purchases like coffee or lunch for an all day meeting. Scaling back pay and benefits because there are lots of people that want to work here so they feel they can easily replace people if they have to.

    Advice to Management

Start trusting your managers and staff to make decisions. Respect the talent in the organization.
