I worked at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The organization has a well deserved international reputation as the best pediatric hospital in the world. The clinical and research teams drive the technology teams to excel, and demand more and more to serve the patients and their families.

    Cons

The organization preaches "work-life balance" but from my observation this was more public relations than philosophy. First level managers and below were considered completely replaceable. Leadership's agenda was not conducive to retention of skilled employees.

    Advice to Management

Learn the value of your senior staff and first level management. Treat them as the skilled and knowledgeable people they are. Listen to them, consult with them. Your projects and day-to-day operations will be much more successfull.

I worked at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Respectable pay. Mission is without fault. Generally beautiful facilities. Have a ton of money.

    Cons

Politics. Preach questioning authority and challenge assumptions, but in practice was go with the flow herd mentality. HR is a shell/holding company of outsourced firms and less than helpful. Board got away from old time conservative Philadelphia money and too corporate (Comcast, Vnaguard, J&J), so its all about mergers, profit margin, and beating the competition.

    Advice to Management

Front line staff is treated poorly. Benefits have been increasingly eroded, productivity suffers, and morale is low. Virtually no employee engagement other than "Atta boy, we're #1 again. Too many leaders in roles that they have never held before, and wierd turf politics /too many AVPs and Up.

I have been working at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You are thoroughly trained and have many resources to work with. Decent benefits for a not-for-profit organization.

    Cons

Low salary. Unfriendly coworkers. Pharmacists are not well regarded unless you are a clinical pharmacist. Poor schedules.

    Advice to Management

Need to rotate all pharmacists and technicians throughout all positions instead of keeping certain ones in the same.place for months at a time. Need salary to be more competitive. Need more standardized training.

  8. "Overworked"

I have been working at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia full-time

    Pros

Good starting pay, excellent patient care, benefits are ok, easy access via public transportation, partial reimbursement for public transportation, rewards for exceeding budget expectations.

    Cons

Lack of communication; no overtime for my department even though it's desperately needed and other departments abuse it; certain people's behaviors are accepted where in other places it wouldn't and nothing is done about it; no matter how you "perform" on your evaluation you get the same measly raise as everyone else. Management and physicians are treated better than the administration.
