I worked at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Assessable accessible to all public transportation, some of the staff are really great people to work with. Some of the management are really difficult and hard to get along with.

    Cons

The work environment is kind of thick. Not all the staff is happy to work there however they need a job so they work there. Some of the management want you to go out of above and beyond without paying you for all your duties they talk down to you sometimes you have to be able to have thick skin

    Advice to Management

You have to be other people before you can be over the people

I worked at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Consistently higher salaries than Penn. Lots of talented faculty. Many projects are quite cutting edge and could have an impact on children's health.

    Cons

Highly fractured research informatics community - there were at least 8 groups doing the same thing as us with no sharing of code. Research is compromised by the hospital IT infrastructure. Managers are not given control over budgets. Turf wars are common - usually the most cutthroat player wins. Poor communication is endemic.

    Advice to Management

Hospital and research computing has different needs - treat them differently. Replace directors when they leave or be prepared for a dogfight. Root out sociopaths.

    Cons

Lowest pay for nurses in the city of Philadelphia.

    Advice to Management

Management has to listen more to the needs of employees and implement them when they create a great work environment.
