I worked at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The patients are why I worked there. Your coworkers are great but every place is working way below safe staffing.

    Cons

Management and the lack of respect given to all employees is the biggest reason not to work there. Every area is working extremely short on staff and patient care is suffering because of it and management doesn't care because the budgets are below forcasts.

    Advice to Management

Middle management only cares about the budget and not about the employee. Their philosophy is if you don't like it leave, we can replace you. Well now no one is applying because the reputation of Children’s has been damaged maybe beyond repair.

I worked at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota (More than a year)

    Pros

The children are amazing. It feels wonderful to be able to care for kids going through a rough time. I enjoyed holding babies, and meeting different children. The nurses are often very nice and caring people, and fun to work with. There are a few bad apples here and there, but most of the nurses are nice.

    Cons

Some nurses and CSA's are the picky type who overreact to small things- with a negative and judgmental attitude. For example, if you accidentally wear a tight scrub top- maybe you put on some weight, then they would report that and it ends up on your record. The management is often picky and looks for things that people are doing wrong- it can be a stressful environment to work because of this. There is more of a focus on rules and details then supporting employee's. I actually had to quit because they were not willing to let me go become a casual worker, and my school load was over whelming in my last semester at school. I ended up going through a year and a half of really difficult job searching/underemployment/depression because I didn't have the support I needed when I requested flexible hours. Some favored employee's will probably report they had a different experience. I was not in nursing school so I think, I was less valued- they knew I would leave eventually. The kids are such a positive that despite the negativity from management, I give this place 3 stars.

    Advice to Management

Children's would have happier more efficient employee's if more respect and less criticism is valued at the upper levels. The well being of the employee's being second may seem like the way to reach your demanding bottom line goals, but it actually is the missing key to the problems your trying to solve. You try to solve those problems in any way but by giving the lower employee's the respect and consideration they deserve.
