I have been working at Children's National Health System full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Children's is an amazing company that provides services for children and families. The Doctors & Nurses truly know their craft. The benefits are very affordable and competitive.

    Cons

However the bad outweighs the good. The attitude of staff at Children's is unbearable. Management does nothing to correct unprofessional staff. They do not appreciate hard working employees. The turn over rate in staff is ridiculous. The only steady staff are Doctors, and 30 year front desk staff that are miserable and rude.

    Advice to Management

Stop focusing on petty Union rules and reprimand employees for their behavior and conduct. Force out your employees that are no longer contributing to the company. Have everyone in the entire hospital take basic etiquette classes.

    Advice to Management

Offer equal opportunities to all positions

I have been working at Children's National Health System part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Awesome benefits
    Joy of helping children
Reasonably clean and functioning main campus

    Cons

    Management overworks you
Complacent attitude from clinics and entire hospital
    Poor attitudes from physicians
    Every department is extremely understaffed
    High turnover rate
HR can't even keep their own employees

    Advice to Management

Give up the politics and actually be for the children and families. Staff the clinics appropriately so that patients don't have to call a million times for appointments or advice.

    Cons

higher positions given to external employees before internal

    Pros

    Good Benefits
    Decent Pay
    Helping Children and their families
Great hospital with lots of fantastic, well-run programs
Great research and incredible faculty of physicians

    Cons

Traditional workplace, can be very slow and very, very bureaucratic
Not a lot of room for creativity or change
Some turnover that would raise concerns for other staff

    Advice to Management

    Be open to change
It's obvious to your staff that there is no room for them to grow, so offer them something else to help them stay

I worked at Children's National Health System as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

The patients are amazing, really nice and sweet! They appreciate all your efforts to help them. The commuter buses to get you to and from the hospital, will pick you up from the subway stations which is a plus! The drivers are nice always on time, runs every 15-20 minutes.

    Cons

No raise, no bonus, overworked. They do not take pride in what the employees do for the patients! They over look a lot that is going on. There is no love in what they do. Not good in the health care field

    Advice to Management

Show your employees you care about them!

I worked at Children's National Health System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great, smart colleagues; there can be some really inspiring stories--from patients and employees; exciting events and opportunities to get involved -- working with DC Government, politics, outside organizations, celebrities; people across the organization are supported through moves to different departments. Departmental culture can vary depending on senior management/directors.

    Cons

Outside of nursing/medical professions there's not an emphasis on professional growth and development; I left because there was no room (or perhaps willingness from senior management to promote) for growth; turnover at lower levels

    Advice to Management

Invest in and promote lower level employees, they'll be more apt to stick around. It's a fun, colorful organization with a great mission but it's important to recognize employees' hard work
