I have been working at Choate Hall & Stewart full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The location is great, Choate is located in the financial district and is proud of their single Boston location. The layout itself is very open and welcoming, a lot like the people who work there.

    Cons

Limited exposure to other practice groups.

I have been working at Choate Hall & Stewart full-time

    Pros

Location is great, one office. Business model is sound.

    Cons

Favoritism is blatantly obvious. Bad apples are consistently rewarded. No recognition for hard work and dedication. Annual review is a joke. No development or career growth potential.

    Advice to Management

Treat your staff better. Hold your managers accountable.

  3. "No incentive"

    Pros

Beautiful office located in an excellent location in the Financial District. Choate has a good reputation as far as Boston law firms, especially IP.

    Cons

No real incentive to strive for excellence, as it is not acknowledged or rewarded. Some really pull their weight while others easily coast. No recognition or room for advancement.

Hugely lacking in diversity, especially at the higher level. Really unbelievable how drastically employees differ in terms of work quality.

    Advice to Management

Value and motivate your employees. No one likes being lied to or knowing that you do not see them as important.

    Pros

Great people - particularly the associates and staff.

    Cons

The firm does not pay market bonuses even though the firm has had record profits for several years in a row.

    Advice to Management

Focus on associate development. Revise compensation policies.

    Pros

The firm feels like a small community. Everyone works really hard with the common goal of providing the best service possible for our clients.

    Cons

Most aspects of the firm are stuck in old-school methods. It's harder for young professionals to come in and be taken seriously.

I worked at Choate Hall & Stewart full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Well respected firm, with great benefits, clear organizational structure. People are hardworking, committed and alternative work schedules considered if your team can work with it, also one can work remotely if needed for the day or if something were to come up.

    Cons

Although they have a 35 hour work week for non-legal associates, depending on your area, the work can often exceed 40 hours.

    Pros

Great opportunity for undergraduate students with an interest in law to gain an insider view of what it is really like to work in a big law firm.

    Cons

A lot of the training need to done on your own. Definitely not for those who are used to spoon-feeding. But after all, if you are not a self-learner, you would't end up here either.

  10. "Very successful firm"

I have been working at Choate Hall & Stewart full-time

    Pros

The firm is a very profitable, well run organization, with very few "difficult" personalities. They have made a conscious decision to remain one office, which helps maintain a good camaraderie. Compensation is in line with comparable firms.

    Cons

The training varies depending on which department you are in. Feedback is a bit lacking. The hours can be long, and there is pressure to produce billable hours, but that comes with the territory.

    Advice to Management

Provide more frequent feedback than just annual reviews.
