I worked at Chubb as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Non abusive environment (I was there when a Manager was let go for such behavior). Reasonable work hours (i.e. overtime not expected or demanded very often). I had some flexibility in my hours. Compensation was good. Work environment was very pleasant and the IT team in Toronto was overall very good.

    Cons

Politics a bit much at times and old "dead wood" in some departments is slowing down / holding back positive progress.

    Advice to Management

Managers & Department heads need to be reviewed just as much as the worker bees and if they don't have someone qualified to do the job properly that needs to be addressed.

    Cons

Under significant competition due to merger with ACE

    I worked at Chubb full-time

    Pros

Excellent comp and benefits, truly decent and hardworking staff scattered throughout the org

    Cons

Tragically inept management fueled by a culture of self congratulation. Progress at the speed of an Ice Age - practically laughable technology.

With the exception of one or two gems, HR truly defines "people haters."

I narrowly avoided the Ace acquisition, Godspeed to those that didn't.

    Advice to Management

Shake things up - you have some grossly ineffective legacies in your midst that are selfishly killing off their succession plans to protect their thrones and leaving you vulnerable. Give Queens a rest, you are producing embarrassing lemmings.

    I worked at Chubb full-time

    Pros

If you like to socialize with your co-workers, Chubb Canada is for you.
No one works very hard. It's all about lunches, drinks and playing golf

    Cons

Homogeneous workforce, no diversity, recruit from the same source year after year
HR has zero integrity and influence employee survey results with cookies and donuts
Terrible IT infrastructure/system and poor financial process in place, nothing works

    Pros

Great working environment, friendly team, nice management very flexible, fun staff outings.

    Cons

Never saw many opportunities for professional growth. Spent a lot of money commuting to Toronto for a salary that wasn't all that competitive.

I worked at Chubb full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    As an Underwriter:
-Lots of responsibility from day 1
-competitive pay and good bonus potential
-great people; I no longer work there but have many close friends still with the company
    -fantastic training relative to competition

    Cons

    -Difficult to move upward;
    -limited global opportunities

    Advice to Management

    focus more on non-underwriting, value-add opportunities like integrating all IT systems onto one platform;
take more admin duties off of underwriters' hands and push to other groups. Underwriters should spend as much time as possible with high-level account management and with business development.

    Pros

Everyone is very nice and polite. The work culture puts importance on social activities and giving back to the community. Great place if you are planning on becoming a lifer (they reward and celebrate the number of years you stay with the company and pension is good). They do pay for performance and pay competitive to the market. Also, there is no discrimination between women and men - you see equal representation in senior leadership.

    Cons

If you are the type to question authority and always strive for improvement, this may not be the right company for you. Though their products are quite innovative, the culture itself can be quite conformist. Image is extremely important (for some this my be positive, for some a negative). Tradition is also important (again depending on who you are, this could be good or bad - I put it as a con because I am someone that loves to continuously learn new things therefore I tend to like less traditional approaches to solving problems to stimulate my mind).
