Be Forewarned - Advice for Millennials Seeking Work Here

Dec 30, 2020 - IT Support Analyst in Denver, CO

      Pros

Generous PTO pool, 401k contributions, pension(although phased out at this point)

      Cons

Since the merger of the two companies the work has grown exponentially, and the company refuses to hire more people. More work for employees and wages are below market standard (company is well known in the industry for doing this). Culture is extremely toxic, senior management comes in angry EVERY day and of course takes it out on the employees. Lots of petty actions by senior management, aka they will look for any sort of wrongdoing and add it to your yearly review. Also I was a millennial straight out of college working for this company. Unless you enjoy working with 90% boomers, you may think twice about working here. Majority of the company people have been here for 10+ years, and are very comfy collecting their paycheck. Good luck trying to make any sort of progression in your career here. My advice for millennials fresh out of college get your experience here and move on QUICK

Only OK if you always agree with management

      Pros

Some of the people who work there are very collegial.

      Cons

It can get very pressured and stressful if they want to do something with which you strongly disagree. They like to interpret controls so that they can fashion what they want so as to maximize profit. However, they do have a senior management committee put in place by regulators that thankfully puts an end to some of these projects. Their approach is do something quickly without much thought so as to get to market asap, and then fix it as needed. They appear to have little concern about the wellbeing of their employees. Unfortunately. the culture is very much like that of the old AIG under Evan Greenberg’s father, Hank Greenberg.

      Focus on the employee more!

Nov 6, 2018 - Assistant Vice President in Simsbury, CT

      Pros

International opportunities/rotations. Strong International presence. Multiple locations across US for mobility. Lots of non technical training options online. Very good Education Benefit (smaller bonuses to complete various educational programs). Smart and dedicated co-workers. Robust bereavement benefit. Great options for medical insurance.

      Cons

Inconsistent work from home arrangements. And held to a max of 2 days wfh per week. So behind the times. Total compensation is very good. Base salaries are lower compared to peer companies, which there is the most noise about. Low PTO to start (17 days per year). No jeans/business casual (only on Fridays). Also a MUST for workplaces today. This is such a missed employee engagement opportunity. Free and easy. Should appeal to senior management and is just not embraced.

Experience was ambivalent ... culture is okay. Manager was horrible. Good managers do exist at the company though.

      Pros

Overall a great company!! Diversity inclusion promoted heavily. Women in Senior Management and Executive roles. Rotational programs, some with international travel. Professional Mentorship program. Decent month end close hours.

      Cons

Manager was unreasonable & micro managed work. Communicated too often throughout the day to the point of work impediment. Work was completed smoothly & more efficiently by the team with manager out of the office. 8+ calls a day, 10 emails minimally every morning, 20+ on Monday mornings , add 40+ emails a day on low level deliverables as "reminders" in addition to detailed reporting calendars and outlook reminders sent by manager, also constant IM's and desk pop ups if 1 email or phone call was missed/unanswered. Manager looked to provoke emotional responses & commented among the office when they weren't given by people. Manager was confrontational with peers in front off staff in meetings. Failed to allow team to take accountability for the work. Manager had a high team turnover, brand new team every 9 months over last 3 years, only 1 of 12 ppl stayed with company and relocated offices at that. High turnover = constant cross training of remaining EEs, were instructed not to ask questions in training and/or leave all together before training concluded as manager needed to know the process even though mgr wasn't going to do the actual work. If those assignments were incorrect, took too long to complete or finished too soon you were on the chopping block. Overall manager could not be pleased.

      Pros

This company is simply phenomenal. Very inclusive; lots of women & minorities in leadership roles. Very team centric and definitely a meritocracy...hard work is nicely rewarded. CEO is charismatic and engaging and no BS type of an individual. Very engaged with the employees and constantly communicating his vision and aspirations for the company’s continued upward trajectory as the top insurer in North America. I’ve worked in the Dallas office at this company for five years and I love the senior management their dedication to empowering employees to make good decisions and the opportunity for advancement hands-down best company I’ve ever worked for!

      Cons

I honestly have nothing negative to say about this company I believe that the HR department is fair and engaging there is ample professional development mentoring and conflict resolution ..all you could ask for in a company
