I have been working at Churchill Downs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There is a great team of people that work here. Derby is an exciting (and exhausting) time of year.

    Cons

The company does not promote from within. I don't feel they truly value their employees. It's a great place to work for a couple of years but don't plan on climbing the corporate ladder here. Management is out of touch. Working every weekend for 4+ months a year is tough on home life. Derby is exhausting and you'll work so much you don't even have time to enjoy it.

    Advice to Management

The bottom line and stockholders are the only things that management seems to care about.

I have been working at Churchill Downs full-time

    Pros

    Great benefits!
    Very generous stock purchasing plan
    Nice working environment
    Talented personnel

    Cons

Churchill Downs gets a big chunk of their revenues out of the Kentucky Derby, that's a hectic, exhausting weekend for us.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work, great job in our recent acquisitions (Big Fish). I also commend you for taking calculated risks.

I have been working at Churchill Downs full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The only pro is to be involved with the Kentucky Derby, though you are not able to enjoy the moment as you are so overworked by that point.

    Cons

Unfortunately management is inconsistent and there are no mentors to learn any skills from and the office is full of negative employee morale. Many inconsistencies with management of employees.

    Advice to Management

    Clean house.

I have been working at Churchill Downs full-time

    Pros

Great benefits, paid time off, holiday pay, pay bi-weekly, mid city location, jazz fest site, excellent resource staff, friendly environment, flexible shifts.

    Cons

Mess, malicious gossip, negative employees, poor working atmosphere, poor coordination, easily hostile environment, place of contention, poor management and supervision across the board

    Advice to Management

Become more efficient, work together as a team, step onto the front line when help is needed, manage understaffed/overstaffed employees

I have been working at Churchill Downs full-time

    Pros

    Flexible PTO policy
    Benefits package isn't horrible

    Cons

Stuffy, 1980s corporate management style, the company always comes first and one's personal life is always less important.

Upper management is completely disconnected from the business. It's all about spreadsheets and money; nobody at the top really understands where that money actually comes from.

A lot of favoritism and unequal treatment of workers in similar roles. Witch hunts and outright persecution of disfavored employees. Discrimination is a problem.

    Advice to Management

Replace the crooked and incompetent management staff, do a better job connecting with the rest of the company, at least do a passable job pretending you care about your employees.

I have been working at Churchill Downs full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The management team is good, honest, fair, and open-minded. There is a great work-life balance and the company does not mind people working from home when necessary. Ask, if you work there for many years, you get 5 weeks PTO.

    Cons

Working at Churchill Downs means you never get to enjoy the KY Derby. In office perks are limited to coffee and soda. Benefit package is average.

    Advice to Management

Come up with a strategy and stick with it. If it is good today after all the research it should be good two months from now. Otherwise due more due diligence.

I have been working at Churchill Downs as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

This is a great short term position for someone during the summer.

    Cons

If you are needing a full time job this job is not for you.
