I have been working at Ciena full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people are mostly amazing. I've made many lifelong friends there.
Fantastic culture of work flexibility. I work both from the office and remotely, and set my own schedule.
    Very competitive salaries.
    Culture of innovation.

    Cons

Lots of turnover lately, especially in Marketing leadership.
Emphasis on hiring senior-level roles from outside, rather than promoting from within. This leads to people getting stuck at a certain level, and they end up leaving the company.
The hardest, most valuable workers are recognized in some ways, but typically not with promotions and raises.

    Advice to Management

Take stock of the high performers and do what it takes to keep them, or else the wave of people leaving will only get bigger.

    Advice to Management

Continue this amazing culture of a working life and don't be quick to judge new talent with new ideas for driving the business forward.

I have been working at Ciena full-time

    Pros

    1. Ciena does a great job of taking care of its employees. 2. The benefits are amazing (such as 16 weeks of paid maternity leave). 3. Management is very open as well as understanding. 4. Work hours are flexible if that is needed.

    Cons

Writing annual goals is a lot of work.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

I have been working at Ciena full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good people who work hard and go the extra mile. Good products and customer relationships. Flexible work arrangements abound. Decent pay.

    Cons

Political shenanigans and hypocrisy the higher you go. But I'm not sure that's not the case everywhere. Benefits have been curtailed as of late with ho-hum bonuses even as profits improve.

    Advice to Management

Don't just talk the talk. Demand more of senior managers and let the rewards trickle down a bit more. Consider hiring from within.

    Cons

Leave and come back to command a better salary...that is just ridiculous that people have to do.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what your doing! It's working

I have been working at Ciena full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Job security - as the company grows, you will ALWAYS have work to do, deadlines to keep, managers to report your progress to. Work-life balance is being reviewed and updated continually (excellent maternity benefits announced just this past year).

    Cons

Deadlines can be stressful, workload increases as the company grows. Good people tend to leave due to stress.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. Recognize those who work like crazy to keep the ship headed in the right direction.

    Pros

Ciena is leading the game within the optical networking industry, and they take care of their employees as such. Smart, talented coworkers with vast industry experience. Solid benefits and pay.

    Cons

No cons to report as of yet.

    Advice to Management

Continue to seek out younger talent and help them understand the benefits of working for a solid manufacturer of widely used telecom solutions, as compared to working at a "tech start-up", which is very popular with the under-40 crowd.
