    I worked at Ciena full-time

    Pros

    Decent pay, benefits, work setting.

    Cons

Lots of politics. Less a meritocracy than a little girls and boys club. Management talks a good game - "it's all about the people, no really, blah, blah, blah." Then suddenly entire groups vanish without warning. Lots of churn in management. The rank and file punch the clock, nod vigorously, and keep mute - and survive.

    Advice to Management

Keep treading water, at least you won't drown right away.

I worked at Ciena full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The culture is steeped in mediocracy. If you want to do the bare minimum and hide in the cracks, this is your place.

    Cons

No vision. No strategic direction. One-trick pony (optical networking). No willingness to take risks. Passive aggressive culture (very Canadian). Full of people who have no clue about what's happening in the broader market.

    Advice to Management

This isn't 2005 anymore. Stop reveling in the past, and start making some bold moves to capitalize on the changing market before you get left in the dust.

    Pros

I only worked for Ciena for a short period of time. The time I was there, I was treated just like the full-time staff. The atmosphere was friendly and engaging.

    Cons

I have no cons about Ciena

I have been working at Ciena full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Ciena feels like a tightly knit group and once you earn your place you feel like family. Many employees who started with the company when it was much smaller, years ago, are still with the company. Those employees form a great foundation and often mentor the newbies on-boarding even though not even asked to do so. I believe the company values those experienced employees. Long term employees indicate how well the people there like their jobs and the company or they wouldn't stay.. right ?

And the ability to work from home occasionally is also great.

    Cons

Advancement can be difficult for the above reason. Like I said many people like working at Ciena and therefore the turnover in certain areas is low.
If you want to advance you have to leave the company.
Bonuses can be based on opinion and middle managers have this discretion.

    Advice to Management

Change the way the bonus is given out so that the employee is guaranteed his granted percentage based on his Title/Level. If the employee meets his or her objectives and has a good review, the given percentage should be granted as a matter of policy. Too often this is subjective and based on opinion, likeability or visibility. Some employees are just quiet and keep their heads down. Middle managers tend to take away from some and give bonus $$ to others e.g. "their favorites". Those getting the big bonus are not necessarily those who are the hard workers and deserve it.
You do your job/ you get your bonus (if the corporate targets are met obviously).
Bonus granting is decided departmentally as some departments do not adjust individual bonuses and already do grant the bonus numbers across the board...

    Pros

Nice people to work with. You are free to manage your time as you need it.

    Cons

This year the cuota / objetives were so ridiculously unreasonable that basically it was like a reduction of 15% of your salary.
