I worked at Ciena full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The tech people are all pretty decent. The management team is fairly decent as well. Good place to learn new technologies. There are a lot of employees who have been there for a long time. They do treat their people well.

    Cons

The real motto of the company is "Do More with Less". Any downturn in the economy and they start dumping people regardless of the effect on Ciena. The moral is not the greatest. and they dump people and spread their duties between the people remaining. This had been going on for the entire time I was there roughly 5 years.. From what I understand from former colleagues this practice continues. Layoffs seem to be driven by salaries instead of value (or lack of) to the company. Small company so limited advancement, usually by attrition.

    Pros

High Technology Company with global operations. This company allows you to expand your experience into many jurisdictions around the world. They continue to develop new technology and acquire new companies and technologies

    Cons

No interest in improving operations. This company begins very large business change projects but never executes on them properly. Each department works very independately and there is not couherent cross functional work.

    Advice to Management

Control Operations. Work on one transformation project at a time and do not allow scope creep. Keep the department heads working together with he same corporate goal and not individual goals of their departtment.

    Advice to Management

Management tries to show off that they are doing a lot for career development of the employees, but in reality nothing much has been done on this front. If you keep doing what you are doing you might lose some valuable resources.
