I worked at Cincinnati State Technical & Community College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Most of the staff are engaged and pleasant. Lots of volunteer opportunities: many boards and committees to serve on.

    Cons

Male dominated culture. They tend to give you a title that is unfitting for the several different jobs you are doing. You almost have to leave to get anywhere professionally.

    Advice to Management

Give your employees regular reviews, at least annually. Set goals for them and coach them. Don't be passive aggressive, be assertive but definitely don't talk about them behind their back. Make succession plans for your staff and treat them with respect. Set them up for success, don't be selfish with your time and neglect members of your team.

I worked at Cincinnati State Technical & Community College full-time

    Pros

The students are wonderful and the coworkers are the best people you'll ever meet!

    Cons

No job security. Top-down decision making that hinders the progress of the College. Not open to new ideas. Shady leadership. :(

    Advice to Management

Listen to your people on the ground. They already know what the problems are and what could be done to make things better. Have the guts to take these ideas from the design phase to implementation.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Great staff. Great culture. Dedicated to student success. Students are generally very dedicated and invested.

    Cons

Incompetent management on main campus. My superiors won't even return my emails. Have to get a signature on paperwork? Good luck. You'll be bounced from person to person for days, each one denying that it's their signature that you need and pointing you toward someone else. You'll go round and round.

    Advice to Management

Look at the good people that you have working for you and do something to keep them from drifting away.

I worked at Cincinnati State Technical & Community College part-time

    Pros

Other Adjunct workers helpful and willing to share and help with problems. Nice atmosphere to work in. Flexible schedule and part time.

    Cons

Not treated with respect by Dean's. Blame teachers for unruly students and students who fail because they don't attend class or do their work. Part of the Dean's Job is to resolve issues between students and faculty. If they don't want to do it in a positive manner then get new Deans Since CS take all students, some are not able to do the work which gives them unfair hope. They are just getting into debt unnecessarily.

    Advice to Management

You are discouraging your faculty when you blame them for student misconduct and failing. You complain that adjuncts do not stay very long. This is probably the reason. You have a difficult clientell and pay poorly. Teaching is hard enough without adding to the stress. Don't blame teachers for student problems.

Great benefits, academic freedom, caring employees, good salary, ability to make changes in your programs if needed, flexibility in teaching face to face versus online

    Cons

Lack of financial resources, relationship between faculty and administration is strained, pressure to pass students as state funding is based on completion, top heavy administration

"Great Students, Little to No Employee Development"

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Students are great, and there are many teachers and staff who care deeply for the students and their success and well-being. If you can get a full-time job there, the benefits are supposed to be quite good.

    Cons

No path to full-time employment for part-timers- no employee development, either. Communication there isn't the best, and consequently students can fall through the cracks despite good intentions and programs designed to monitor and help students along. Information is hard to get--the website is the worst, and it doesn't look like it will be launched soon.

    Advice to Management

Develop the talent you have there--there are tons of great people languishing in part-time positions.

    Pros

The faculty are supportive of each other.

    Cons

The management/administration does not respect the faculty.

    Advice to Management

Trust people. Don't listen to the "old guard." Make opinions for yourself. The separation between management and faculty will break this college.
