I have been working at Cincinnati Zoo full-time

    Pros

You feel like you really make a difference, experience people from all ranges of diversity

    Cons

It is a nonprofit, so wages are low

I worked at Cincinnati Zoo part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Opportunity to share conservation messages and to educate the guests on many aspects of the importance of animals to the environment.

    Cons

Ideally we work rain or shine, snow or heat. But everyone's individual health and well being is always paramount. Some days are slow while others can be packed, but you just gear up accordingly.

I worked at Cincinnati Zoo part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's fun working at the zoo, seeing cool animals and working with nice people and overall has a nice atmosphere in my opinion

    Cons

You get called off a lot, you rarely get to work overtime because they'll send you home, job 4 free tickets and the beginning of every season but nobody tells you about it, they automatically take out $4 a day for food, horrible rush hours, get sent home early a lot too, if you had actually bills you won't be able to play them such a rent or a car note because you barely make any liens working here

    Advice to Management

Higher pay, let people get the hours in that they need to get in

I have been working at Cincinnati Zoo part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great experience working with animals and public
    Flexible scheduling
    Easy-going fun co-workers
    Great networking
Can volunteer in other areas for experience
Wonderful passion for nature and respecting the world.
    Great research and conservation
    Great lectures and learning opportunities

    Cons

    - Like any zoo full time is very few and far between--but you can't blame them, the employees are treated well and are happy. I've had many coworkers get awful attitudes because they interned one season and didn't get a full time job; or worked in ticketing and won't be hired as an elephant--You get out what you put in. This field is very competitive and it takes a very long time. Often you must leave and get another job at a different zoo because you can be considered for full time. I'm sorry if some people don't like it, but that's how the zoo world is.
    - Rush hour traffic is pretty awful.

I have been working at Cincinnati Zoo part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very enthusiastic crowd and naturally filled with a passion for learning. The culture is as a family and there is much support among the staff.

    Cons

Because it is such an appealing place to work, there is much competition and therefore hiring full-time is minimal

    Advice to Management

Support your part time and seasonal staff in more ways than monetarily. Many of the staff work hours on end at other jobs so they can stay afloat.

    Pros

Unique experience to work at a zoo!
Getting to interact with guests throughout the zoo!
    Chance to drive the train!
Animal experiences given as rewards for high sales!

    Cons

This department needs some major changes. The management can be pretty horrible, What was once a really fun department, is now a place where you don't feel appreciated and you feel over worked. Also, the employees change so much, you never really get to know who you are working with. Hours can suck too but you know that going in.

    Advice to Management

Think about how you are treating your employees. The supervisors can be EXTREMELY inappropriate at times!! They find favorites and treat others like crap. It used to be a very exciting department and now it has turned to crap.

You guys are doing a good job!
