I worked at Circuit City full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Large company, innovative, great training programs. Kept things lean, but also had wonderful cafeteria. Central operations were all in fairly close range, so not much travel was involved. Open door policy that was comfortable to work with

    Cons

The IT department was a little 'Dilbert' like. Standard builds were kept to technology that was several years old, and would change frequently.

    Advice to Management

Training was great, much appreciated! Standards could have used a little more advise from the tech staff, going to the rock bottom line on price on hardware is not always a good idea. High level mismanagement, or mismatch of software / equiptment to the purpose at hand tended to get blamed on the person who carried out the orders, not the source who actually made the decisions.

I worked at Circuit City full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    When they were around...

Working at Circuit City was a great place. The competitive commission environment taught you how to be aggressive and be the best salesperson you could be.

They helped build great salespeople through training training training. From product training, to one-on-one's with upper management. The Circuit City of the late '90's was an excellent place to work and grow.....until....

    Cons

The biggest challenge was overcoming politics, as with any company.

    Advice to Management

They should have kept the commission environment instead of changing to the Best Buy model...they'd probably still be in business.

I worked at Circuit City full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Management was great. The customers that came in were amazing and everyone knew everybody.

    Cons

No cons, it was just an amazing place to work at.

    Advice to Management

The bonus structures were great, but I wish there were more incentives.

I worked at Circuit City full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I liked working here, it was a good laid back working environment.

    Cons

Could not mange company to keep from going under. Too many top level players giving them selves $500,000 bonuses for just staying with the company for 6 months at the end. A CEO that had TONS of BEST BUY stock while working as CEO for Circuit City. Talk about a conflict of interest.

    Advice to Management

    Don't go out of business.

I worked at Circuit City part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Circuit City was a place where every employee, from Manager to Cashier, felt as though their opportunities were limitless. Everyone was on the same page and it was truly heartbreaking when they filed for bankruptcy. I felt the company had a great future ahead for them and was stunned that they weren't as put together as I thought. They had many ideals that I feel still help me with my current job today.

    Cons

Of course, retail calls for long days and long nights.

    Cons

Lenient management, did not really follow company values.

    None.

I worked at Circuit City full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you were a good salesperson and energetic, you could make some decent money for an entry level retail sales position when the pay was on a commission basis. There were opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

The company let go of most of their good salespeople when they went to an hourly pay rate system. Those people were often some of the more knowledgeable people as well, so that further hurt the customer service. The upper management of the company lacked vision and true leadership; they spent a lot of money on consultants trying to make up for this lack. They were also reactionary rather than proactive in how they managed their business model.

    Advice to Management

The company has changed to, as I understand it, a web only based company. Not sure if any of the old management came over. I hope not. They needed true leadership, and if my understanding is correct that they no longer have physical stores, their business model would be markedly different.
