I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working at Cisco is very flexible. Cisco is all about work-life balance. There are lots of opportunities to succeed and add value.

    Cons

Expect to work hard, competition is stiff. Women are still paid less than men, however, they are working on it.

    Advice to Management

Continual restructuring and reorganization can be disruptive. Congratulations on slowing this down and stabilizing the teams.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very deep pockets, lots of cool and available resources. Great work life balance.

    Cons

So big that it is hard to get help when things aren't going well. No IT department.

  3. "Great company overall, but localized internal practices vary"

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Pretty good pay, bonus and benefits. Innovation is encouraged and supported at high levels, but not necessarily at lower levels. There is strong enterprise support for most internal needs, and flexibility when specific requirements come along.

    Cons

It's difficult to run a company so large and varied.
Acquisition is the norm instead of internal innovation in many business units.
Management is focused on the investors before employees.
Company frequently pushes the same practices and expectations on different business units inappropriately.
Internal quality suffers as management struggles to meet goals with limited resources and mediocre engineering practices are accepted as the norm, in some business units.
The company standardizes on one-size-fits-all solutions internally, but every solution seems to have an 18-month lifespan.
Benefits are comprehensive and good, but the employee is charged for most options.

    Advice to Management

You have the message right. The execution is lacking as far as employees are concerned. Don't be afraid to do the right thing for your people.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    A very positive work enviroment.
Lots of amenities - such as quarterly team-building activities mandated by the company ("Fun Fund")
Treat employees with courtesy and respect
Lots of community service/community involvement opportunities.

    Cons

Too frequent "workforce reductions" - we joked about being on yearly contracts. It plays havoc on employee morale
    Frequent management re-structuring.

    Cons

'Realignment'=lay-offs, consistently. Very difficult to advance into another position.

    Pros

The company was very supportive of the community. They were always having a fundraiser or donation drive for some of the local charities. They also supported the local STEM program.

    Cons

Like many large companies, there is a tendency to sell of business units and lay off employess as a way to show improved bottom lines.

    Advice to Management

Continue to recognize the engineering staff. They are the people who continue to innovate and create your products and services.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I came into Cisco through the Scientific Atlanta acquisition in 2006. Cisco has a good work environment. Benefits are good and they encourage working from home for most roles. Cisco encourages moving around within the company and they encourage professional development.

    Cons

Too many layoffs. Cisco seems to do annual layoffs. If you're working in one of the old SA BUs then you're days are likely numbered. On-call was tremendously stressful and the work life balance left a lot to be desired.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what's going on in the company and stop laying people off. The number and frequency of layoffs within Cisco make it look like Cisco doesn't know what it's doing, and it's a believable perception at this point.

    Cisco Systems Response

Thank you for your review. We certainly do encourage employees to learn in different areas of Cisco, so that if layoffs do happen, they are able to move to another area of the organization.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time

    Pros

Decent pay, good benefits, flexibility to work wherever you want.

    Cons

Company is in mature to declining state creating highly political work environment, layoffs every year, stagnant wage growth, and almost no opportunity for career advancement. Company has almost no ability to innovate and senior management that only care about making money for themselves and friends (at employee and shareholder expense). Annual reviews are really more popularity contests than reflection of work product and achievement of objectives...

    Advice to Management

Get some real management and stop playing musical chairs every 10 minutes...

I worked at Cisco Systems (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good salary, lots of perks, although many are available in San Jose only. Depending on your interests, you can work on some new techmology

    Cons

If you are not in the central core business, you are at risk for a layoff. If you are not in San Jose, you will find your advancement opportunities limited. Heavily political with regards to advancement, everywhere.

    Advice to Management

Stop dumping staff when you stop a project - most of them are willing and able to learn the new skills needed in no time.
