I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work life balance, nice people layered across the motivation.

    Cons

Hardly no motivation to improve. Company culture heavily focused on layoffs. Rigid "promo freezes" create weird culture where managers open "new reqs" to promote people instead of simply rewarding top contributors. Loosen up the OpEx and you will likely retain top talent, thereby driving revenue growth.

    Advice to Management

You don't promote top talent. You are too focused on cutting headcount and operating expenses and yet you wonder why revenue continues to decline yearly. Not really a rocket science problem here. Also, it's a bad look when you have "promotion freezes" and yet you give VPs and SVPs huge RSUs. The Canada Sales VP gets a 500K signing bonus, yet you can't give out a 5K bonus to any of your workers? Poor money management. Focus on rewarding top contributors or else they will leave.

    Advice to Management

Give people the opportunity to move around instead of just
    paying lip service to it

I worked at Cisco Systems as a contractor

    Pros

    - Strong brand recognition
    - Interesting projects
    - Lots of opportunities to network

    Cons

    - Teams are very insular, and the overall experience is very dependent on the nature of the team you're with.
    - Pay for contract employees are not competitive
    - Internal politics can greatly impact your potential for success, both positively or negatively

    Advice to Management

Allow your employees to do their job without constant interference from upper management. Have a more reliable and transparent system for project/team evaluations.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good people
Chance to hop teams for diverse challenges

    Cons

    Legacy monolith
Only innovates through acquisition (funded by layoffs)
With few exceptions, outdated work environment
Mediocre benefits for such a large company (many startups are better!)
Culture and diversity are more talk than walk

    Advice to Management

Get back to your roots, and figure out how to leverage the intelligent, hard-working people you have to innovate vs firing thousands every quarter just to finance your next acquisition. Stop flip-flopping on business strategy (every few months with mass turn-overs in sr mgmt), which from my direct experience is why you failed at cloud.
