I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large company at leading edge of technology. Expect rapid changes in product planning and employment.

    Cons

Due to rapid changes, a job at Cisco is always interesting. For example, I might have had 3 or 4 3rd level managers in 2 years. I stopped even remembering the name.

    Advice to Management

A little more stability may be a good idea? Just a thought. But I know they are in a tough market that is getting rapidly commoditized. It is like trying to be a PC maker in in '90s.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    1. Benefits are awesome: 10K tuition p/year, matching 401k packages, 1 week to volunteer for a nonprofit of your choice (fully paid and Cisco will donate $ 10 p/hour worked to the nonprofit), San Jose gym is top notch, and much more!
    2. People are great and highly collaborative. I can't speak for every single person at Cisco but I can say that almost everyone at Cisco is always willing to help a peer!
    3. Great programs to get involved--Conexion, Connected Black Professionals, Men for Inclusion, Connected Asian Affinity Network, and Pride are just some of the excellent programs and groups we have. This is a really great way to network with people all over the company!
    4. Great work/life balance. Need to work from home? Work with your manager and if they're okay, then life is made easy for you!
    5. Exciting place to work in terms of the industry! Working in tech is fun and exciting!

    Cons

    1. There isn't much diversity in Engineering or IT but Cisco is actively working on attracting diverse talent
    2. Cisco is HUGE and it is easy to get lost in a 73K+ employee company. The way to navigate is participate in the Employee Resource Organizations and subscribe to mailers that have events!

    Advice to Management

I would advise management to continue doing their best and encourage people to be their best!

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Generally, the people are friendly and smart. It's been that way since I started over a decade ago. The pay is good, benefits are good, and in many areas of the company, you can arrange your working time around your life/kids.

The Hispanic/Latino group - Conexion - tries to create a sense of community, encouragement and support among the Latino employee base.

    Cons

There are a lot of sub-cultures within Cisco, making it very difficult to work cross-functionally. Some groups are punctual, data driven, their word is their bond. Others are undisciplined, political, unreliable.

When John Chambers was CEO, we used to talk about the Cisco family, and our mission: changing the way the world lives, works, plays, and learns. More recently, it doesn't seem we talk about that anymore. There's less talk about the family, and we lay hundreds of people off every 6 months.

    Advice to Management

Apply the lessons being given by the guest speakers like Simon Sinek who teach us about building great teams. Improve the ability of managers to manage people instead of just the technology and processes. Find a way to unify and inspire the old timers again. We see the new hires excited, but many veterans are jaded.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Really enjoyed working in security sales at Cisco. Positive but intense work environment. Teams that want to do right by the customer.

    Cons

The security sales leadership turns over every 12-18 months. This creates direction instability that shows itself at every level of the organization. When the leadership is good, it's good. Every other turn they promote someone from a new acquisition (IronPort, Sourcefire) and it's a friggin mess.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course. Promote from within. Leverage creative input from outside but groom your security execs the same way you groom core team leadership.

    Pros

Culture and prospect of what could be are there. Great benefits. Teams are amazing and you love the people you work with.

    Cons

Work life balance is poor. Work 70+ hours and 7 days a week. Do more with less. Never time for vacation and when you do take it you are expected to be available.
