I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to work, tremendous project support. Company benefits are generous.

    Cons

Large company upstream management can eat up (lay off) departments with little or no warning.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large company at leading edge of technology. Expect rapid changes in product planning and employment.

    Cons

Due to rapid changes, a job at Cisco is always interesting. For example, I might have had 3 or 4 3rd level managers in 2 years. I stopped even remembering the name.

    Advice to Management

A little more stability may be a good idea? Just a thought. But I know they are in a tough market that is getting rapidly commoditized. It is like trying to be a PC maker in in '90s.

    Pros

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Work life balance is good
Chance to work on industry standard technology
Company reputation is still good for tech career

    Cons

Too many reorganization hurts morales. Annual layoffs make employees wonder when I am going to be cut.
Lack of lateral move opportunities between orgs
    Benefits is good, not great

    Advice to Management

Figure out a coherent strategy instead of buying a bunch of companies that only sound fitting together on the surface. This kind of strategy needs to come from technologist not sales people.

I worked at Cisco Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The office was in San Bruno which was helpful for living in the city. There's a game room with rock band.

    Cons

Most of the smart people from the Ironport days have left the company. The review process for specs in incredibly onerous. Some work needs to be done on process.

    Advice to Management

Improve the ability for engineers to get things done. Need to provide interesting and new challenges for employees.

I have been working at Cisco Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work life balance. Pleasant working environment. Surrounded by smart people.

    Cons

Constantly "reorganizing" the internal structure. Once a year you have to worry about getting laid off. Not because you or your group is underperforming but because the higherups' mismanagement.

Also, The manager to engineer ratio is too damn high.
