Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    PRWeb – An Utter Joke

    Feb 28, 2018 - PRWeb Editor

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Casual work environment, decent PTO and benefits

    Cons

I’ll start off by saying this: you did not work hard to earn your college degree only to end up taking a job with PRWeb. You deserve better, even if you’re fresh out of college. I initially liked my job at PRWeb. Editing press releases was something that I am good at. I liked it enough to overlook the fact that PRWeb is essentially a call center where you’re expected to be glued to your phone 40 hours a week to take constant calls from customers. Yes, you read that correctly: constant. You’re also expected to provide customer service through email and through a chat service. A higher up told me that I’m not an editor, I’m a “service person.” Nice. You’re expected to be the face of the billing department who refuse to be of assistance until they have all of the information they need- information you’re expected to get from the customers. I was not a part of the billing team but was expected to be their secretary. Again, nice. You were also expected to field calls for the support and technical teams and do their work as well. An intense amount of work is dumped on editors at PRWeb for very little pay and with no reprieve. I was marginally okay with all of this until our SOP’s and our content acceptability guidelines were greatly changed. My job was completely overhauled (and that’s an understatement), workloads were increased, and people were fleeing the scene left and right. Let’s now address the turnover of employees. The turnover is incredibly high. Ridiculously high. During my time there we lost a manager and probably 12-15 editors. This was very stressful because the work still had to get done, it just meant you were getting more calls and were expected to handhold the constantly arriving batch of fresh faces. Not fun. Truth be told, we had a female start on a Monday who left on her lunch break only to never return. She later emailed management and said that she was not able to work for such a disorganized company. Even she saw it…within four hours. I was proud of her. Instead of taking a deeper look at this problem, management laughed and moved on. Professional? Effective? Despite all of the problems and changes and high turnover, I still worked hard. My KPI’s were consistently excellent (typically higher than most), and I was turned down for raises quite a few times despite being a high performer. I went above and beyond for my job and team and was never once recognized for it. PRWeb/Cision does not recognize or appreciate hard work. Period. On top of that, there is zero movement at PRWeb. Your option is to stay or go. Both lower-level and upper-level management stated several times that they don’t expect people to stay and that they are not concerned with the high turnover rate. This is a terrible attitude to have for people in a position of management. Instead of making changes to keep qualified, hard working employees happy, they’d rather see them go. This is not the way to run a company. Free coffee and juice is simply not enough. Shame on you.

    It's a job, alright.

    Pros

Because you need a steady paycheck and health insurance. At least, that's why I took the job.

    Cons

Minimal communication between departments causes inefficiencies and alienation. Pay is not high (I'm making the same hourly wage I made a decade ago in a significantly less-demanding position) and is currently under a wage freeze. In our department, at least, there is almost no room for advancement within the company, and no chance to work on professional skills - if anything, my skills have atrophied since coming aboard. 'Cracked' software on workstations is also out of date. Nontechnical staff make technical decisions.

    Pros

Vacation policy is really great Benefits are pretty good, you get to choose between two medical plans For the most part, the people are what make Cision great. Not necessarily the managers or senior leaders ( each department varies) but the actual employees are just good people. They have really tried to make change happen for the company culture and at times, you can tell. It has been good changes The work/life balance is good for the most part ( again, depends on your department), but I think most people would agree.

    Cons

The pay isn't always what you would consider fair or up to industry standards. It's very hard to get increases when you're in certain roles, even if you are given more responsibility. It isn't consistent throughout the whole company. There have been a lot of changes and even though some are good ( mentioned above), some just drive uncertainty among the employees.

None, besides the people as in your coworkers. Managers let way too much happen with us not being paid correctly and didn’t do anything to support us

    Cons

Literally some ppl did not get paid October - December bc cision changed our numbers to not have to pay so much money back to ppl and ended up costing some ppl 2-3 paychecks

    Cision Response

Hello - I’m concerned to hear that there is still some confusion over 2021 commission plans and a misperception about payment. But I’m pleased to share that we’ve made a lot of progress in 2022. Our Commercial Ops team has been listening to sellers and taking action, quickly and carefully, to roll out new plans and processes. We are committed to creating a great team and rewarding people well and fairly for their work. I appreciate your advice – putting people first is absolutely always the way for building a successful team. Wishing you the very best for the future. –Piotr Marczewski, SVP Americas

High Stress = Low Rewards / Department Degradation / Sales Rules All

    Jan 6, 2020 - Professional Service Consultant

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    * Work from home policy is very lenient. As long as you get your work done and you are able to answer your office phone somehow you can stay home and work. * We get free fruit on semi-daily basis but this has become a standard almost everywhere. * Coke free-style machine with nice soft-drink options but it does not get cleaned very often.

    Cons

    * Severely underpaid for the amount of work and stress we have to deal with on a daily basis from clients and the Sales team. * When new products are launched, there is little to zero training on what it does and how we should implement it for a client. Even with this in mind, Sales will just sell it anyway- They are solely driven by numbers and they are never reprimanded when something goes wrong and it is obviously their fault (mis-sold product, poor customer service/communication skills etc). * All C-Level execs are completely out of touch with every department except Sales it seems. Sales is constantly treated to free breakfast/lunches, team outings and happy hours. The CX department (PSC, Support, Training etc) rarely get anything despite being told that we are 'under appreciated' and 'deserve more recognition'. They have yet to do anything of measure that truly shows they care about, 'one of the most important departments in Cision'. * There is massive turnover right now and not because of 'financial restructure' or anything like that, people are just tired of it. Some people who have 20+ years of experience are leaving, and Cision is doing nothing to retain that knowledge/experience. * As you may have heard, Cision was acquired by, Platinum Equity. The year prior, Cision bought out one of their main competitors, TrendKite, as well as another company, Falcon.io. All the while, our department heads are telling us Cision does not have enough cash to give us a fair raise... But we literally bought out two companies last year and we were the ones who had to help migrate it and make it a smoother transition. Many have spoken of it in their reviews and I will say it here as well - Cision does not pay ANY of their employees well and barely recognizes the hard work we do to make it all possible for our clients. * Even if you get 'promoted' (usually just a lateral move that shovels more ridiculous responsibilities on your plate) it is a very minimal pay bump. Actual growth does not exist in Cision because those who have big titles hang onto them until they can't take it anymore/find a better job. * Leadership is lacking and also leaving. People have been promoted, then demoted and allowed to work among those they once led. Those who are in leadership roles currently are stressed out and have to do their best to be patient with their team and help carry them. All of this has had a major effect on the CX Department morale.

    Confusing and frustrating

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Remote work, flexible PTO, and great coworkers

    Cons

Cision is a large company that seems to have no sense of direction or permanent leadership. During my short time at this company we have gone through 3 CEOs and multiple managerial shifts. Q1 2022 the commission structure was redesigned and a majority of the sales staff took a large pay cut. There has been persistent effort to implement new processes to make the company more efficient but they neglect to ad value for customers. They also have a very poorly built billing system that causes issues on a regular basis. The career trajectory is quick because the turnover is high. BUT you will find yourself 3 positions higher with only a 8-10% pay raise from where you started. And you started at below market pay for what you do.

    Pros

Very innovative company who acquire market leaders to grow different divisions of the business. Wonderful culture which embraces diversity, flexibility, autonomy and creativity.

    Cons

After lots of research it looks as if they pay under the market rate albeit the benefits and culture make up for this.
